But the great Jared Diamond in "Guns, Germs and Steel" offers an answer. According to Diamond, while evolution in "primitive" hunter-gatherer societies selected for the fastest, smartest, strongest and so forth, the industrialized world selects mainly for body chemistry -- for people who are more genetically resistant to certain epidemic diseases, without regard to intelligence or physical skills. And these people continue to produce more disease-resistant offspring who are also intellectually or physically unqualified to do much besides occupy space and flip burgers.

Add the fact that Americans have the TV on for about seven hours a day -- childhood development studies almost universally stress the irreversible mental stunting caused by hours of passively staring at the tube at an early age -- and you've got a pretty good hypothesis to explain why freepers are freepers.

In other words, they're too stupid and dysfunctional to live well in a smart society and they've probably been robbed by TV of whatever intellectual attainment they might have achieved had they grown up curious and interested. Which makes them prime targets for non-nuanced, black-and-white viewpoints that pit good against evil, jesus against the devil, liberals against wingnuts, the US against the world, and so forth. And they admire a moron like Bush because they see themselves in him -- socially inept, tongue-tied, anti-intellectual, strutting machismo, burdened by the commitments of the job when all he wants to do is drain a six-pack and watch a little football.

Sounds like a fair assessment to me.

Look at DU, this is probably one of the best designed site I have ever used. Very easy, everything makes sense.
