Speaking of televised debates...
I remember the 1999 GOP candidate debates quite clearly. It was Senior year of High School, and my Econ teacher rolled in a TV so we could watch.

By the end, most of the class was laughing. You may not remember what a motley crew of candidates it was: a hothead (John McCain), a laughingstock (Dan Quayle), a lunatic (Alan Keyes), a nerd (Steve Forbes), a closet-case (Gary Bauer), and of course, some guy with a Texas drawl whose dad had been president. It was completely chaos--everyone was fighting to talk over each other, quibbling with the moderator, and generally making themselves look ridiculous. Although none were stunning, McCain came off the best, which is a reminder of how long ago this was. But there was no question who came off the worst.

Bush Jr. was asked a simple question about his record in Texas, and he proceeded to go off on one of his now-typical stammering, stuttering tangents. In his own clumsy way, he touched upon everything--Clinton and Lewinsky, tax-and-spend liberals, big Hollywod, compassionate conservatives, one nation under God, etc, etc, etc--until his time was up. The moderator was unforgiving: "With all due respect, Governor Bush, you didn't really answer the question." The class erupted in applause.

I remember this so clearly. I looked at that smirking, posturing, malaprop-prone former alcoholic, I though to myself: "There is no way in hell this idiot is ever going to be elected President."

And you know something? In the end, I was completely right--he wasn't elected! Hahahahahahahahaha.....

<sigh>

Anyways, what time and what channel tonight?
