If you have seven minutes to spare, this is great Jon Stewart -

'Extreme Makeover: Baghdad Edition - ''Daily Show' mocks Baghdad's unpopular dividing wall-

"Obviously in its early stages, we made a few missteps-Apparently, from what we are now being told... there are two kinds of Muslims," Stewart quips, "and they don't appear to care too much for one another."

1. There are several hundred different kinds of Christians and
several hundred different kinds of Muslims. None of them like each other because each one wants to be in control over what is right or wrong in their religion.

2. Which just re-confirms that we, as a species, should PUT RELIGION BEHIND US
Been there, done that, slaughtered millions of people in _________'s name (insert favorite miracle working deity here).

4. Religion is an excuse
Its much more accurate to say that factions evolve different religious ideologies because they are are in conflict with eachother than the other way around IMHO. So without religion we kill eachother for different, though probably not any more honest, reasons. The way I see things it usually boils down to wealth.

5. But it's the "perfect" excuse...
...because it bears no scrutiny. By definition it cannot be proven; every believer is "certain" they are privy to the "truth". No evidence or argument can undermine this faith. Only such an absolute could justify the otherwise self-evident horrors that have been perpetuated in the name of religion. Please read The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. It was certainly therapeutic for this recovering Roman Catholic.

6. While you are at the bookstore...
Pick up a copy of Sam Harris' "The End of Faith".

7. In pre-modern societies religious sectarianism is basically ideological sectarianism in disguise.

8. Religion is bullshit, but it's just one reason people kill each other.
Never underestimate the ability of the human race to come up with an excuse to kill itself.
