UC official: Outrage over top execs' bonuses is 'utter nonsense'
SACRAMENTO, CA - "Utter nonsense." That is how a University of California spokesman described UC workers' complaints about bonuses handed out to the school's top executives.
Steve Montiel, media relations representative for the UC Office of the President, said, "They're not bonuses. Our top management people get pay incentives."
UC workers trolled the halls of the State Capitol Wednesday, talking to state lawmakers about unfair treatment.
Letisha Carter said at a time when workers are being furloughed and student tuition is going up, "Our workers are being laid off, our hours are being cut and we're short-staffed."
Carter's anger was sparked when UC Regents last week gave $3.1 million in bonuses to 38 university administrators.
"It didn't go to the employees like us who give their blood, sweat and tears to their job. We come to work and work hard and we didn't get a bonus," Carter said.
