I meant, Who would be such a judge NOW? Any ideas? I can't think of one at the moment.

If James McCord had not written the Judge that letter and Sirica had not chosen to read the letter aloud in court...

Study the whole of the Watergate affair. There were heroes and villains but there were also things that happened that were amazingly serendipitous. For example, Nixon would probably have gotten away with everything if the committee investigating had not decided, "What the heck, let's interview this Butterfield guy".
