So maybe someone could name the Republican Administration that
steered the US economy in a better direction than Obama is currently doing. I would be quite interested in the history lesson.

1. You're right, there is no better direction than the one Obama is "doing" as you say.

2. They will claim Reagan...
Though his thugs looted Social Security after jacking up our payments and created the laissez faire regulatory scene that created the savings and loan debacle which was father to the current bank debacle.

7. Reading "The Triumph of Politics" gives an excellent history of
people too willing to fudge things up and cover Reagan's ass than to actually tell him that he fucked up ...

4. Bill Clinton...He was the best Conservative President America had since Eisenhower
But if you simply must have a Republican, really, Teddy Roosevelt.

5. Wait wait wait....bush is putting out his
memoirs this year and he said he is going to set the record straight. That means he will tell the country how wonderful his eight years were. How he manufactured jobs, had low energy prices, responded to Katrina in a timely manner. Prevented the attack on the Twin Towers and all the rest of the good stuff. Oh and the wonderful wonderful time he had for the people before Obama's recession.

6. You are right, of course, which begs the question
Is a satisfactory goal for Democrats to merely "steer in a better direction" than Republicans?
The party could just adopt this slogan:

The Democratic Party: Better than Republicans . . . ~on the whole~

Or, to paraphrase an old advertising slogan, is it incumbent upon them to be all that they can be?

Maybe I am dreaming, but I prefer a Democratic party that is
unquestionably superior to Republicans across the board
