John Edwards Will Always Been Seen........

......as a SCUMBALL to most of the public until most of us leave this earth.....BUT!!!!!....Tiger Woods can go to SEX THERAPY stay low key for a few month and come back to GOLF and be a HERO again...

Why is there such a contrast between sports figures and political figures when they basically did the same thing.

Can John Edwards' Dreadful Image Be Rehabilitated

1. Because no one entrusts a sports figure to lead a country, for one.
Edited on Sun Jan-24-10 10:10 AM by Mayberry Machiavelli
That's the great thing about sports. It's pure, in that all Tiger Woods has to do to live up to expectations is to put a ball in a hole better than anyone else on the planet (and likely in the history of his sport), and he does that.

As far as his personal conduct and morals, those expectations are entirely outside the sphere of his sport. Obviously they relate to the his sponsors and the image they want to convey, but it has nothing to do with golf itself.

6. Great reply
"Because no one entrusts a sports figure to lead a country, for one."

I was a strong supporter of Edwards and when he didn't make the cut, I was happy that Kerry picked him for VP. I agree with you 1000%. Bravo!

16. Actually not true. Gerry Ford was a college football All American and drafted to play for Green Bay
of course nobody remembers that anymore.

We've had several sports figures in politics including including Bill Bradley who ran for President in 1999.

26. I don't see where there's a meaningful distinction.
Their celebrity derives from their sports ability and plenty of "ex-jocks" are doing endorsements alongside "current" ones.

38. Curt Schilling supporting Brown
is one step removed.

As I understand, Coakley was ignorant of the importance of Red Sox Nation as well as a tool of corporate healthcare,

{Note I am a SF Giant fan since 1959 and my grandfather played for the SF Seals so no Red Sox bias.]

One is blind to not notice there are politcal scapegoats in professional sports often aligned with politics and an opportuntiy for politicians and sports administrators to gather personal attention.

Pat Tillman is a hero; the DoD is was not an NFL Allstar that sacrificed all for truth and principal. Tillman was with asymetric knowledge and died and the death used as dishonest propoganda by those still in charge at DoD and the media. Bless the Tillman family.

get the most votes, because he's Shaq. Wouldn't surprise me one iota.

22. You Know the Most Important Fact About This Revalation?
It is how much less important it is, than this SC decision to allow corporations to bathe candidates in money, yet how much more coverage trashing a slightly more liberal democrat in the media.

It's in the past. Who cares?

Cute kid, I'm told. I'll bet she has great hair.

there is talk of the federal investigation into just that. Did he use federal election money as hush money for an affair? He is a dirtbag, just like sanford.

7. Nothing left to say.... just a tragic waste because of unbridled lust
Somehow, I doubt he would think his little tryst was worth it now, though apparently he had staff trying to warn him. I doubt Elizabeth wants to see the father of her two children this publicly reviled, but there is a limit. Meanwhile is the despicable woman who forms the other half of this scandal going to skate? Seems now that she's delivered a child, she is getting Madonna status. :eyes:

10. Edwards owed something to his literal financial supporters and to the Democratic Party
By asking Democratic voters to donate to his campaign rather than to another Democratic primary voter, and by asking the Democratic Party to nominate him for President rather than another Democratic candidate, he asked to be entrusted with the Democratic Party banner entering a crucial Presidential Election race for the future of our nation. Had his repeated overt lies about his affair been confirmed and gone public during that race against McCain, the odds strongly favor that Edwards would have been defeated. That would have been a betrayal of trust with monumental consequences for Democrats and the nation, and going ahead with his campaign for the nomination while covering up his affair showed terrible judgment.

Tiger Woods has no direct influence over matters like war and peace, and poverty in America. The President of the United States does. The only good judgment that Tiger Woods has to show is in choice of golf clubs for different shots and the like.

Seriously, how does/will ANYTHING Tiger Woods
DO have ANY effect on myself or my family?

I don't give a CRAP what Tiger Woods does or

I DO care if a jerk-off like Tiger Woods or
John Edwards is making decision that impact
on myself, my family and the country itself.

18. Tiger Woods never claimed to be a defender of 'traditional
marriage'. Unlike Edwards, Tiger never stood on a stage pointing at his wife and pontificating about how deep his Baptist roots run, his Daddy the Deacon, and how he just can not come to support equal rights because of his view that 'one man and one woman' marriages are what God intended.
Edwards said all of those things and more while he was having that affair, that child, and lying about both. Try to get your mind around that. He claimed to be so moral, so Christian that he just had to defend marriage. One man, one woman, another woman, children from both. And speaking against good, dedicated couples to benefit himself and his wife, who stood there in full knowledge by the way, as he bore false witness against millions, and in favor of himself.
Neither of them have said a word or spent a dime to make recompense for that vile slandering of others. Not one word, not one dime, from a couple that has many dimes, and spews words wildly when they wish to, when it profits them.
Sorry, there is no comparison at all. None. Try again.

Tiger is a Golfer. Edwards was a politician, and there are different standards for each profession.

The grammar police in me wants to give you a ticket for temporal logic violations, I think you are missing an auxillary verb in your subject.

25. I think this wins the award for dumbest post of the day
Tiger Woods is a golfer. He hits a little ball with a stick. He has no impact on your life other than as a sports fan.

John Edwards is a politician. He has the ability to craft legislation and policies that can have profound influences on your life.

THAT is why there is a contrast between the two.

It didn't help he screwed it all up, but for me it was never about him anyway--it was always the message of class warfare by the few against the many.

Tiger Woods, however, poses no threat to the status quo.

That's what did it for me re: Edwards. I am from North Carolina, supported him in the beginning and was disappointed when he dropped out. When his affair became public I lost ALL respect for him, and he will NEVER gain it back. Cheating on your spouse is one thing; cheating on your DYING spouse is another. Elizabeth Edwards OTOH is a wonderful person, and I wish her well.

41. It's just disgusting how they decide who to destroy.
<snip>There's unpopular, there's widely loathed, there's despised, and then there's John Edwards. Americans are a tolerant people, but they have a line, and evidently, when you cheat on your cancer-stricken wife, lie about it to everyone while running for president, and then decline to acknowledge fathering a love child for two years, you've crossed it. <snip>

Yet, Newt did almost the exact thing to his wife when she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery and he gets mentioned as a possible candidate for 2012.
