Great Insurance Story!
Yesterday, my son got his finger stuck in the hinge side of a door at school and got his finger squeezed hard! He cried and cried and was soon brought to a nearby clinic where his finger was x-rayed to see if it was broken. It wasn't, but they bandaged it and made an appointment for him to be seen by another doctor for a followup even though it was just a little boo-boo really. The whole think took about 15 minutes probably and the bill? It was 8 dollars.

All this is true even though we have only been here for 10 days. We live in a place where the EXPECTATIONS for how people should be treated is VASTLY DIFFERENT than the U.S.
Here, it is generally believed that if an x-ray machine is sitting idle, it should be used to help keep people healthy and injury free.
Here, an x-ray doesn't cost hundreds of dollars and, since there is no $4,000 deductible bullshit, I don't have to decided between buying food or heat and getting the x-ray.
Here, I won't be struck with a $5,000 dollar bill for a hernia operation and I will be allowed to stay in the hospital for a few days after they slice me open. AND if I buy some cheap additional insurance (20 bucks per month), I can get insurance in which I will actually EARN money while I am in the hospital (about $100/day).
Here, I got insurance immediately on arrival, even though I am a foreigner.

Where am I?

I am in Japan.
