NOTE TO CNN'S SANJAY GUPTA: PUT DOWN THE MICROPHONE AND PICK UP THE STETHOSCOPE!
He's a damned trained medical doctor and he's on the ground there. He needs to be helping people not reporting about their misery!

7. Stop bleeding, perform CPR, splint broken bones, triage victims,..
have you never even taken a first aid course? You don't need a lot of high tech equipment to actually do something meaningful.

10. Um...he was at the airport.
There weren't injured people there, just people wanting to get out and the president who he interviewed because he was the only correspondent still at the airport.

I suspect he was waiting for the medical supplies and equipment to arrive.

He also did that interview several hours ago and has not been on air since, so maybe the supplies arrived and he's off with the medical team.

17. Just one thing, in this situation CPR is a no-go
due to lack of resources.

Cruel, yes... but that is triage.

20. it all depends.. I'm aware and I've done the FEMA and R/C training.
If the worst thing you have to treat is someone needing CPR but no one else is going to die immediately, you do the CPR. If there are multiple people about to die you pick the one you think you have the best chance to save.

12. Well whatever he does you can be sure that it won't involve socialized medicine
That would just be wrong, and study after study have proved that it just doesn't work.

Now if all of these Haitians would just line up with their insurance cards, ID, and credit cards then we can start letting the MUCH more efficient private insurance take care of this problem before and socialized medical doctors kill someone. Oh, and by the way, let's make sure that we don't use any drugs donated by Canada - who know's if they are safe.

Sanjay can kiss my lilly white ass.

16. Here are some things you can do in a disaster when medical supplies are out
You need to splint a leg? Well some broken down shirts and cardboard is great for that.

You need to stop bleeding, you can improvise bandages.

I could go on.

Thankfully when I was trained and where I was trained we were taught to improvise as well. We never assumed we'd have the gear at all times.

Oh and during the floods in TJ, one of my patients had a broken ankle... no medical kit to be had (ok minimal) Well guess what? A swiss army knife and a cardboard box (thankfully new it is stiffer), and a piece of rope had that ankle stabilized until we got him to the Trauma center.

Granted we had a trauma center, so that is an upside. But you'd be amazed just how much first aid, some of it pretty sophisticated, you can actually render in a disaster area when your supplies are gone.

Ideal? Far from it, but it can be done.

Now the better explanation is that he is there as a reporter and rarely, though he's done it. do reporters go into other roles.

There were no injured people there.

MEdical supplies were supposed to arrive at that airport.

That's why the president was there.

The interview was hours ago.

Gupta has not been on air since.

Are you starting to connect some dots here?

25. What part of this is what you can do even when you do not have
actual, honest to goodness, first aid materials are you purposely missing?

I am not talking of Sanjay in particular, but in general this is WHAT YOU CAN DO with improvised materials.

Can you connect some dots too?

Now here is a reality for MDs though, unless they are Trauma docs or ER docs, they rarely can work without supplies.

26. Well Gupta COULDN'T DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS!
He was at the airport.

No injured there.

He was waiting for the medical supplies to arrive.

The president of Haiti showed up because medical supplies were supposed to arrive.

He interviewed the president of Haiti because all of the other CNN correspondents were off to the city and he was the only correspondent at the airport.

He hasn't been on air since.

So this entire fucked up thread was a useless waste of bandwidth all because somebodyu has a hair up their ass over Sanjay Gupta.

31. this is so true
i've dealt with a few in the field, and compared to a salty paramedic or flight nurse, your average MD is CLUELESS when it comes to field medicine. ER/Trauma docs are another matter, of course.

33. True story... and it involves my brother
he is a GI specialist, so his days in the ER as a resident happened easily a decade before this incident.

We were driving to Acapulco from Mexico City when we came across a MAJOR accident. He wasn't going to stop. But I managed to convince him since I had an extremely basic first aid kit. Never leave home without it.

So we stop, I start doing basic triage and stopping the bleeds. He took my Stethoscope and started doing what he does... and felt quite helpless. I have never seen him as relieved as when the first ambulance showed up and I did transfer to the senior EMT.

I love him, but trust me, he is the LAST person I want at an emergency scene.

38. yea., that's been my experience
i used to be a lifeguard in college, at a toney east coast resort town. LOTs of doctors (and lawyers).

had a few instances where medical attention was needed, and they were USELESS. these were mostly highly paid specialists, like plastic surgeons, podiatrists, etc. i assume.

the funniest i ever saw (this was a nude beach) was when two nekkid people were doing CPR on a drowning victim. nekkid and all butts high in the air. there was no internet then, thank god for them.

23. YEs, which is why Gupta was at the airport while his colleagues moved into the city
And it was why the president of Haiti ended up at the airport to personally see the supplies arrive and to give his assessment to aid workers as to where the supplies needed to go.

Plus, Gupta hasn't been on the air since the interview.

And it was just reported, supplies have begun arriving.

But no, he's far too interested in getting his face in front of a camera.

But if I were a medical doctor in the middle of one of the greatest disasters of our time, I wouldn't be preening for the cameras. People are screaming for help everywhere from what I hear.

I'd say screw you, CNN, the people need me more than you need me right now.

If that's not your view, fine.

21. Only on DU do I learn (from some who posted here) that a doctor is impotent without supplies.
That without medicine or supplies, there may as well be no doctors in the world, because after all, without those accoutrements, they are merely wizard-wannabes, and 100% replaceable, because all that book-lernin' about trauma care and the human anatomy was all just for show and to generate income for medical schools. :sarcasm:
