People are under buildings being crushed to death.. Time to pull together for their benefit
This is day one of a disaster that will be monumental.

The response of the rescuers will be hindered by the destruction of the infrastructure of Port au Prince.

http://www.miamiherald.com/business/breaking-news/story/1423022.html

I am begging, on my knees begging.. this disaster needs all hands on deck with as positive a movement for rescue as we can muster.

Also, 80% of Haiti is Catholic, and 16% is Protestant.

This is a very religious country.

You may hate religious people, and everything they stand for.. but right now.. people need to be saved... literally...

3. Grow up
This is a disaster and we're all trying to help any way we can afford to.

Using it as an excuse to whine that your god isn't getting flattered sufficiently by everyone concerned is petty.

4. Episcopal Relief and Development
Surprising as it might be, Haiti is the biggest diocese in the Episcopal Church, so we have a pretty large presence there.

ERD is collecting money for Haiti. If you do not have a favored charity, this one is certainly worthwhile: http://www.er-d.org/

6. I agree.. the Epis are a good place to donate.
Red Cross.. etc.

As was stated on the TV, it will be a matter of hours, before the scam artists start flooding.. so having a group like the Episcopalians gives people confidence their donations will go where they should!!

Thank you

17. You're welcome! ERD is a good group, and as you point out,
the coming days will be marked by scam "charities" making appeals, so ERD is a good option.

15. Thanks for pointing this out
I was going to do Doctors without Borders, but I'm sure my Church will be organizing something through ER-D.

:hi:

16. You are welcome. I am also seeing if my own parish has plans in this area.
If not, we can donate directly through the website of ERD.

5. President of Haiti, "I have no place to sleep tonight."
The president of the country said that.

There is now no government infrastructure to this nation.

If the rest of the world doesn't help, this tragedy will only become worse.

7. The religion of a population in a disaster should have nothing
whatever to do with our response. We are responding, and quickly.

10. LOLWUT?
OK...I have seen threads with people debating the existence of god and condemning the asshole Pat Robertson - but please show me a thread where someone implies that Haiti should NOT get help due to their beliefs? I am a long time atheist and would donkey punch anyone that suggested that sort of inhumanity.

Unrec'd

11. Been on the front lines in actual disasters in Mexico
a very religious country. Trust me my religion had NOTHING to do with me going into the remains of a building to pull a casualty out.

So instead of encouraging people to ahem pray, encourage them to give money so the TRAINED people who can actually do boots on ground can go.

12. Using this tragedy to claim that DUers hate religious people,
especially that they hate them to the point that they want to see them crushed to death... I just don't know what to say about that.

Of course we should help in any way we can. But to use this as an opportunity to trash DUers... Like I said, I just don't know what to say about that.

13. Thank you for cluing us atheists in on that.
We don't have a moral compass, of course, so it's always helpful when religious people can give us pointers like this. (I had to ask a religious person if I was supposed to thank you, too. What would we do without you guys?)

14. Yes, the bickering can wait for another time.
God knows, pun intended, it will always be there, and that right now the focus should be on meeting the immediate needs on the ground. We may not agree on much, but you're right on here. (Actually initially I thought your thread would be about DU's political divide, the same thing can be said for that right now.)

19. Why do you point out their religion?
And use this tragedy as some personal soap box? This seems very crude to me. And also pointless, in terms of the people. Do you keep a list of faiths that you do and do not assist in a tragedy or what?
I just do not get that whole attitude.
