Hugo Chavez: Venezuela Needs 'Socialist' Soap Operas
From The Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez says there's too much capitalism on Venezuelan TV. So he's urging producers to start making films and TV shows that stress socialist values.

Chavez says producers should be making "socialist soap operas."

He said Sunday he recently visited Cuba "and they have soaps there. But they're not capitalist soap operas."

Cuba does make some of its own programming. One of Sunday's offerings was "Our History: I Die for the Revolution." But its state-run television channels also airs Brazilian soaps, Walt Disney cartoons and programs such as "Desperate Housewives."

Chavez-allied producers made a 2004 soap opera called "Love Inside the Barrio" that emphasized socialist values but failed to draw many viewers.

1. So instead of hunting the Ice Princess, Luke and Laura plot to overthrow the fascist government
in the neighboring country in Central America . . . Wow, that's must-see TV.

Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 11:54 AM by LoZoccolo
and even funnier watching his apologists here try to explain why it's OK for him to do all these things over there that would spark outrage here. And even funnier if you can get them to say that we should be doing them here.

Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 12:07 PM by tammywammy
The US should use the military to make sure evil corporations, including my corner independent grocery store doesn't raise their prices during an inflationary period. He's looking out for the people! This is just the MSM's way of spinning the story to not look favorable at Chavez. We all know he's awesome, that's why our capitalistic media cannot allow any positive stories from there. You should only read Chavezista approved news sources and Huffington is not on that list.

13. But he can have an opinion on what kind of stuff should be produced, just like anyone else.
Tipper Gore called for less obscene music
Dan Quayle criticized Murphy Brown for being unsupportive of the traditional family structure
Chavez is calling for less depictions of bourgeois protagonists and more depictions of proletarian protagonists

31. Right, because Dan Quayle had a previous track record of ruling by decree
and shutting down media outlets too, amongst other things. So it's not fair.

This is fun. The Chavez game is one of the aspects that makes DU the best online game EVAR!

You can't just air shows on TV that aren't capitalist propaganda! Can you? WTF!

Good thing we don't have propaganda here... :eyes:

26. Part 3 is a piece of shit. Even so, as a work of art, it is a capitalist work of art
Art nearly always has underlying values. Just because you don't get it or choose not to get it is no reason to scoff.

30. I never called it propaganda. I don't think soaps that have socialist values are propaganda either
What I know is that these works have underlying value systems and that the value systems are promoted through the work.

I'm putting you on ignore because I'm sick of your rude behavior.
