1. Ehh, not really.
He's calling for the photos of Michelle to be published. Scans of passengers aren't going to be published.

Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 12:47 AM by winyanstaz
He has a point that if it is NOT invasive..then there should be no problem for Michelle to go through it as well.
And as they are telling us it does NOT show genitals..there would be no problem..right?
It would also set American minds at ease if she did.
After all ..they also say there is no way to identify anyone :)

5. No, you're misstating his point.
He is challenging her to go through the scan and then publish the images worldwide.
Really dumb argument, actually.

9. Really?
They are planning to replace all of the other scanners with full body scanners here at the Seattle Airport. I believe I heard on NPR, they would be joining 16 other airports around the country in using them as primary screening methods.

17. TSA: "These technologies are optional for all passengers."...
I posted this in another thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=7431550&mesg_id=7431621

From TSA website: http://www.tsa.gov/approach/tech/imaging_technology.shtm

Protecting Passenger Privacy

* Strict privacy safeguards are built into the foundation of TSA’s use of advanced imaging technology to protect passenger privacy and ensure anonymity.
* The officer who assists the passenger never sees the image the technology produces.
* The officer who views the image is remotely located, in a secure resolution room and never sees the passenger.
* To further protect passenger privacy, millimeter wave technology blurs all facial features and backscatter has an algorithm applied to the entire image.
* The two officers communicate via wireless headset. Once the remotely located officer determines threat items are not present, that officer communicates wirelessly to the officer assisting the passenger. The passenger may then continue through the security process.
* This state-of-the-art technology cannot store, print, transmit or save the image. In fact, all machines are delivered to airports with these functions disabled.
* Officers evaluating images are not permitted to take cameras, cell phones or photo-enabled devices into the resolution room.
* Each image is automatically deleted from the system after it is cleared by the remotely located security officer.

What are my Options?

* These technologies are optional for all passengers.
* Passengers who do not wish to utilize this screening receive an equal level of screening and undergo a pat-down procedure.
* Multiple signs informing passengers about the technology, including sample images, are displayed in plain sight at the security checkpoints, in front of the advanced imaging units.

* Many passengers prefer advanced imaging technology. In fact, over 98 percent of passengers who encounter this technology during TSA pilots prefer it over other screening options.
* Additionally, passengers with joint replacements or other medical devices that would regularly alarm a metal detector often prefer this technology because it is quicker and less-invasive than a pat down.

Where It Is

* Albuquerque International Sunport Airport (Primary)
* Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (Secondary)
* Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (Secondary)
* Denver International Airport (Secondary)
* Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (Secondary)
* Detroit Metro Airport (Secondary)

30. hmmm
* This state-of-the-art technology cannot store, print, transmit or save the image. In fact, all machines are delivered to airports with these functions disabled.

The ability to store, transmit or save would be CRUCIAL for any court proceedings..and to have that disabled would render the use of the machines effectivly useless in a court of law....and that ability was especially ordered for the machines in the original order for the machines.
I simply do not believe they went through the trouble and the expense to have that feature to simply disable it...especially when if anyone was arrested or harrassed or tazed etc...DUE to the discovery by the machines..that would need to be presented as evidence.

Also...the waves used are said to unravel dna. If your dna is unraveled your body is severly compromised and so is your health. These machines have NOT been tested for any long term effect either.
If a pregnant women goes through and the dna of her fetus is unraveled..what then? Abortion thanks to the airlines?

33. I agree...
I was not aware myself that it was optional until this article.
People need to fully understand what the other option is...and what all it intails.
Will it include some stranger sticking their hands inside your underwear? Full body cavity exams? What?

4. The larger issue is that scans can be saved and put up on the net
And we might be REQUIRED to go through them. That's a huge civil rights issue.

6. I agree that it is a big issue but for me the main issue
is why do they think they can do that to us in the first place?
That and if it is so safe..then our leaders etc should go through it as well.

35. update....
they now admit the machines were originally ordered with those capabilities but are telling us now that those capabilities have been "disconnected"/turned off.
However, I dont believe it because of the simple fact that if anything ever happens to anyone after one of those scans..or a "terrorist" got through...they would need the evidence in court for the lawsuits.

If it is ok for citizens to ask their wives and children to be subjected to that ..then it should be alright for the Elected officials to also have their wives and children subjected to that.
If it's all that non-intrusive and safe then thats not a problem..right?

Michelle Obama does shape public policy; she's married to someone who does. If someone wants to demand that I undergo a "nude body scan," they damn well make that demand of me, and not of my husband.

13. There is some merit to the argument but what a smarmy messenger
I think there is merit to the argument against full body scans and civil liberties issues, and that if the government says it is not an issue that they could set an example by having the first lady scanned, but this guy just comes across so badly that I have a hard time agreeing with him. His idiotic glee and laughing about it are repellent, even if there is some merit to the argument.

I am sure no one actually expects or even wants Michelle to go through the machine.
