Operators at Braidwood Generating Station entered and terminated an unusual event Saturday night due to a small fire on a plant ventilation fan bearing. The event was declared at 7:51 p.m. and terminated less than two hours later at 9:11 p.m. There were no injuries and no damage to the plant. Both units remained at full power during the event. The fire was extinguished in 16 minutes after the initial report of smoke in the area. The fire was extinguished by the station’s fire brigade, and no off-site assistance was required. An unusual event is the lowest of the four classifications established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Situation Update No. 2

Some troubles in the Block 1 at the nuclear power station of Volgodonsk on the January, 10 caused shutting it down. The background radiation is within the mark, so there are no reasons for panic. Now the block is shut down for maintenance. It is supposed to resume functioning in 4 days. The failure of the steam generator happened at 9. 20 a.m. (local time) on the January, 10. According to the preliminary data, the reason for maintenance is a leakage in the steam generator pipes. The atomic power plant of Volgodonsk in the first one built in Russia after the Chernobyl disaster, more properly, in 2001. It disposes two reactor units; the second one began functioning last December.

Russia's Volgodonsk nuclear power plant was shut down for maintenance work after a technical fault was detected in one of its two reactor blocks, the Interfax news agency reported Sunday. The steam generator in the first reactor at the plant located near the city of Rostov, some 1,200 kilometres south of Moscow, was found to have a leak, according to the report. According to the company operating Volgodonsk, radiation levels around the plant would remain normal during maintenance work, which would take about four days.

1. Safety mechanisms functioning as planned
but since you posted 15 minutes ago, 262 people have died from atmospheric pollution related to burning coal.
