When you leave DU...?
What do you want people to say about you? Will they remember you fondly or will they breathe a sigh of relief? Or will you not give a damn what people think? I hope we can all say it has been a good experience.

Peace

3. yeah, kinda depends on how one conducts oneself here. If one is a jerk
and treats others poorly, then you'll get that back. On the otherhand, if one is respectful, you'll get that back too. Depends on which wolf at your door you feed, the nasty, hurt, angry, abusive one, or the respectful one.

28. I would describe the groundswell of aggression like this...
Edited on Sat Jan-09-10 12:46 AM by lyonspotter
...people seem, en masse, to be very critical of each other of late, and the expression of it is very rude. It reminds me of quarreling siblings. The lack of charitable response has had me scratching my head on more than one occasion recently, wondering if I will leave DU soon or just stick it out. I think people are perhaps understandably worried and depressed, but we shouldn't resort to immediate attack and assuming bad faith on the part of nearly every poster we may slightly disagree with.

If I do leave... Well, perhaps I'll just stick to watching the news clips that are posted in the video forum, but not entering into discussion any further... if the rudeness continues...

Given all that I wrote above, I'd like to say that I appreciate the tone with which you have addressed my first statement.

48. sure. Thanks. I hope you feel heard. That's important. So, when
I hear you describe the aggression as similar to sibling rivalry, I ask myself, well, whose attention then are the sibs seeking, what is this symptom a manifestation of?

For myself, I have been reflecting on the amount of effort I gave to the Obama campaign last year and in 2008--donations of money, time--canvassing, holding houseparties, giving OFA feedback because I genuinely hoped that maybe this time an administration would be listening. Afterall, the outgoing message from OFA and Obama was--"we want to know what you are concerned about, we want your ideas, talk to us".

Well, he/they got plenty of feedback, and then over this past year didn't govern as he campaigned. The whole campaign team was switched out after the election and the bankers, Harvard smarties, and folks from the huge problem-making corporations came into the administration and were expected to find solutions to the problems they had created and benefitted from. (I got the first intimations that Obama was not able to handle conflict when he hired Geithner, Summers, Rahm and those folks, as well as having Rick Warren give the ?invocation? at the Inauguration). ("uh oh, Obama's not listening" = "Dad's not listening to me".)

So, there've been multiple examples over this past year when Obama's policy decisions go completely counter to majority public feedback he's gotten.

I imagine that there will be this "sibling rivalry" effect of a sense of betrayal by some, manifesting in aggression, and a counter action of support for Obama, those who have a hard time accepting the inevitable disillusionment, those who protect and defend Obama against criticism. I think we see that being acted out on DU, just like is happening "out there". And a functional leader would not be conflict averse, but would attempt to listen to both/all sides and then verbalize why he's making a particular decision. I think as a nation we are missing that piece. There's fury about being left out when he campaigned on transparency and then acts in a secretive manner. There's fury about hiding the corporate bribery going on.

Of course there's going to be rancour on DU. We're wanting to be heard, we're wanting not to be lied to. We're wanting this time to be different.

Some posters are able to contain/own their feelings better than others. Those that attack probably are feeling very hurt (on both sides).

If Obama is going to have a successful presidency, my hope is that he will start listening more intently, begin to tolerate conflict better, and let it happen. Let the airing of grievances happen, let the possible solutions be heard. All of them!

11. I'm not sure that's the question I'd ask if I'm considering whether to stay or go.
There is a book I'd be surprised to learn you haven't read called Illusions, by Richard Bach. I understand that it was at one time the only piece of contemporary fiction to end with a comma.

As you are one of the first DUers to wish me a welcome and not all that long ago, understand you and your posts are something of a barometer for me. That's because you've earned my trust with good questions and a reasonable temperament when pushed to a defensive position.

Every case I have seen you make is made with a belief in where you stand and when the insecurity of others causes you to question the quality of who you are...I repeat, don't let em get you down.

You know who you are and that there is value in the view that is unique to you. I appreciate your efforts to share.

I can't deliver peace, its just too big and requires a collective beyond my meager means to gather, but if I by saying this I leave you with a little more peace of mind. YES, you are absolutely one of the good guys and a point of light I'd rather not be without.

In case this is my only opportunity to express my gratitude for your encouragement and support, tyvm.

Edited on Sat Jan-09-10 12:16 AM by frazzled
Didn't look back. I wasn't particularly fond of being pm'ed "I hope you burn in hell" by a perfect stranger. Whoa. That I don't need.

I don't know why I ever came back. It's crazier than ever. Sometimes you just have to express yourself, even if nobody reads it or people tell you to burn in hell. But since I came back a few years ago, I only make comments. I have not started a single thread on my own. I don't see the point in it. It's like a crazy magnet, no matter what side of the fence you're on. I don't feel I need to dominate a conversation by starting a thread. Someone else will eventually say what I'm thinking.

53. Hi There!
I missed seeing you. I haven't had the time to post much over the last several years. Mostly do cursory reading (esp LBN, but also GD) first thing in the am, and when I get home from work. Cursory reads keep one from getting sucked into the dynamics that have often been wild and wooly.

When I do have more reading time - like you I often hang back and read - and eventually a point I might make gets made by someone else.

21. Three guys in a bar were discussing how they'd like to be remembered when they die. . .
One was a doctor. He said he'd like to be eulogized as someone who cared for the sick, helped when he could, and above all, did no harm.

The teacher sitting next to him said he'd like to be remembered for teaching people to read and think, and for improving so many lives.

They then turned to the bartender. "What about you, Dalton? What do you want people to say at your funeral."

"Only one thing," said the barkeep. "Look! He's moving!"

that much what people say to me when I am. I consider myself to be a realist, and what I read here sometimes leaves me scratching my head.

Is this the same place that I joined years before?

DU, although a great idea, is overpopulated with fly-off-the-handle armchair prima donnas.

Seriously, though...my ignore list is pretty small.

People don't make it to my list unless I feel they've acted like hugely obnoxious assholes. Not just in the heat of the moment, which I can understand, but some people want to act like idiots even when someone is trying to be reasonable and decent.

58. It would be nice to be remembered...
but I post so infrequently, that most current posters have no idea who I am and thus wouldn't remember me.

I still read daily. Just only have a few minutes here or there (working too darn much! but am working so I shouldn't grouse) - so mostly read.

60. I Will Never Leave
Personally, I want a place to where I can vent my opinion where I am not going to ambushed by wingnuts. When I post on Topix (which is my main forum), I get ambushed by winguts and climate changer deniers all of the time.

This is a place where is some sanity in the room. Therefore, I will never leave the forum.

82. I doubt I will leave
at least not any time soon. This place is keeping me sane! I live halfway between the middle of nowhere and Rednecksville and am surrounded by idiots. It's nice coming somewhere where there are some like-minded people!

85. Hard To Believe It Matters, One Way Or the Other
If i'm here, nobody cares. If i'm gone, nobody will care.

And, i'm not sure i should be defining myself over the impression left on people who i barely know.
