FCC wants to stop expletives, sex, and violence on Basic Cable.
Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), who voted to authorize the Iraq War, wants to help them with a bill.

Do you like "The Daily Show" or "South Park" which occasionally have expletives?

Do you like "The Shield" which has violence?

These shows may be fined by the FCC if Senator Rockefeller wins.

The FCC's conclusions probably will form the basis of legislation being drafted by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, says spokeswoman Wendy Morigi. Rockefeller, a Commerce Committee member, will introduce his bill after he has digested the FCC's recommendations, she said."

1. Self regulation works fine
South Park is censored by Comedy Central, even though the FCC doesn't require it. What good would government involvement do? This is nothing more than a power grab from the people who know better than us over at the FCC.

16. I don't have proof of that. But "South Park" also..
...uses the word "fuck" half-beeped regularly.

No network show does that which I know of.

17. South Park pushes it to the limit and bleeps when it reaches that limit. Do you find that
offensive?

24. My point is that the government should stay out of it.
If Comedy Central wants to bleep half of the word "fuck" when uttered on "South Park," I don't care. I don't usually tune into that show, anyway.

5. What is swearing, anyway?
Not to play dumb, but I've always been fascinated by the subject. What is the thing that separates, say, "dung" from "poop" from "crap" from "shit?" Why are some words okay and others not?

Can anyone offer a coherent answer to this?

10. There was a George Carlin routine about the words you can't say...
...on TV.

The FCC fined a station which played the routine on the radio and the Supreme Court upheld the FCC. Therefore, the words in that routine were considered illegal for broadcast stations from 6AM to 10PM.

7. This Could Be Quite A Court Case
Cable has been considered "closed-circuit"...or a private connection to the viewer as opposed to over-the-air that uses public airwaves and is open to all to view. The FCC would claim their control of the airwaves as their reason to censor speech on the airwaves, but it had no power over cable. The decision of what is decent or indecent on cable has been considered a state or local issue (community standards) and thus any FCC attempt to get into playing nanny on cable will be met with strong resistance not only from the broadcasters, but also from local entities as well.

It's time to reconsider what is "offensive". I find the verbage of hate spewed on right wing talk radio far more offensive than any of the infamous "seven dirty words". I find a religious huckster who incites social discrimination and exclusion as more offensive than when they let the word ass go and bleep out the word hole. Go figger...

But I don't think anything they do violates FCC Indecency Regulations.

It should come with a warning label. ;-)

28. Animals "go" on Animal Planet shows all the time.
Hasn't caused the end of the world.

:eyes:

Violent shows are on the air because a lot of people like them. If you don't, you have every right not to watch.

And it still doesn't change anything about reality. What you hear on the news is far worse than what's on any show.

29. Yeah, they know...
they just want to pretend all the bad stuff will "go away" if they can make it. Also, they don't care that they're meddling in the rights of other people. All that matters is what they want.

People are so lazy today. Can't say no to their kids! :eyes:
