Revenge for Daschle? Top Senate Republican & Bush Loyalist McConnell Braces for Tough '08 Reelection

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell may have a serious reelection fight coming up next year. The arch-conservative is one of the few elected officials stubborn enough to maintain full support for President Bush and Iraq, and even his home state of Kentucky seems to be getting sick of him.

Last month Politico reported that the liberal blogosphere and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have their sights set on what would normally be a safe seat for a Republican. Americans United for Change, a national progressive organization, recently spent $200,000 for television ads blasting McConnell's Iraq stance in seven local markets.

With a fresh memory of the defeat of Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, McConnell has already started raising big money, in part thanks to fundraising help from Bush. He currently has at least $4.6 million in his account.
