UN to Produce Bullion Coins as World Currency

The announcement by the United Nations this week that it will license the minting of silver and gold bullion coins bearing the UN logo may be the button that launches metal prices into orbit.

In its wide-ranging report this fall, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) stated that the system of currencies and international banking practices within today’s economies were inadequate, and responsible for the present economic crisis. The report advocates that the present monetary system, wherein the dollar acts as the global reserve currency be re-examined “with urgency”.

The UNCTAD Report was the first time a major multinational institution had forwarded such a suggestion or measure, although a number of countries, including Russia and Brazil have supported replacing the dollar as the world's reserve currency. China's central bank chief Zhou Xiaochuan has mentioned that the dollar could become a basket of currencies instead.

The UN commission dismissed such a widening, saying a multiple-country system "may be equally unstable, and not transparent."

1. The original link gives 404 when you go to it. The rest of the sites featuring this story = gold
bug & conspiracy sites. I can't find it on any news site.

I tried to re-paste it, but it turned out the same. The story is from the San Francisco Examiner if you want to look it up.

11. As Hannah Bell said, the link goes to Google's cache.
When you try to click on the original article you get an error message saying the article isn't published yet and to come back in 5 minutes.

On edit: And Hannah Bell was questioning whether it is legitimate, since it does not show up on in a news search.

"TFN stands for The Future News, which consist of “articles” in a news release format that outline innovations and events we might like to see, as Humanists, actually come to pass.

The idea is then out there and the reader is most likely amazed to see so much progress being detailed in one article. :-)

All in good fun, your local Humanist at work, with a small purpose in mind. Please submit your own constructive speculations to admin@humanist.ws"

6. I didn't notice that it was in the religion section.
So they're scaring the religious people with talk of a universal currency. Yes, the rapture must be coming soon.

22. I downloaded the report they referenced, and couldn't find
any instances of the word "coins" or the last name of the person allegedly quoted, "Koffe". http://www.unctad.org/Templates/webflyer.asp?docid=11867&intItemID=5003&lang=1&mode=downloads

Good catch, Hannah Bell. What I did see when reading the "goldbug" site links more carefully, is that these are not a new UN currency, but merely a license of the UN logo to use on national bullion coins. Many countries have minted gold coins for years. The U.S. mint just suspended its program recently, likely as a response to the skyrocketing price of the metal.

I'm thinking about contacting Stiglitz to see if he was accurately quoted. Whether or not he was, it definitely was not in the report as the story claimed.

I was fooled. Thanks for alerting us.

its made in Belgium by the Royal Mint. Couldn't find another story on this either except through the Examiner.

9. Let me know when they make paper money redeemable in Gold
Every Government in the world already does this. I have a collection of about 50 silver coins that has been given me in my childhood in the plastic containers to keep them in mint.

23. Easy to debunk.
Just search for the word "coins" and you will find no instances come up. Or the name of the person "quoted"--"Koffe".
