Imam Says Fort Hood Killer Asked about Killing GIs a Year Ago

The Fort Hood shooter talked about killing U.S. soldiers almost a year before the attack that left 13 people dead. In an interview televised by the Al-Jazeera television network, New Mexico-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Aulaqi said he received an email from Army Major Nidal Hasan in December 2008 in which he asked whether it was okay to kill American troops and Israeli civilians. Previous news accounts had established a connection between Hasan and the radical imam, but the Al-Jazeera story was the first to reveal the military psychiatrist’s possible premeditation so far in advance.

Educated in the United States, Aulaqi, has been living in Yemen, where he came under attack on Christmas Eve as part of an assault by Yemeni security forces on al Qaeda elements in the country. The attack reportedly killed at least 30 people. It is not known whether Aulaqi was harmed.

The U.S. provided intelligence and “other support” to Yemeni forces that carried out the assault, but details of the attack and its consequences remain unclear.
