whites still held own private party week before first integrated prom...
http://www.local10.com/education/12833285/detail.html

Still, traditions die hard. Only about two-thirds of the school's 160 upper-class students purchased tickets for the prom, blacks still easily outnumbered whites at the dance, and many whites still attended their own private party a week earlier.

"Last weekend was more like tradition. It wasn't racist, or prejudice," said Calvin Catom, a white senior who attended both parties. "This weekend is about the whole school getting together and having a party."

Few other white students would comment about the dance, telling reporters gathered outside the gym that school officials told them not to talk to the media.

Doesn't this make you sad?

1. of course it was racist
i don't get this whole crap about how if it's been going on for a long time it's not racist or bigoted . the reason it needs to stop is because it was.

and the school shoudln't have told them not to talk to the media about it.

7. Racist? They got two parties.
What kid is going to give up the opportunity to party down two times in a week?

Sure the 1/3rd that didn't go couldn't 'integrate,' but the others obviously had no problem with it.

I don't get this "we all have to have colored friends" ideal.

11. are you being serious here ?
the whole purpose of that party was because the other party had blacks and they didn't want that. it wasn't about just friends hanging out and partying.

8. So do black proms and black graduation events. We seem to be our own worst enemy about
propigating racial separation.

9. wow, this is just so backwards
makes me wonder what other schools still are effed up. check this out:

The high school is one of the few things that give Ashburn a sense of community.

"The school is making changes - and they're long overdue," said Aniesha Gipson, who became the county's first solo homecoming queen last fall as it abandoned the practice of crowning separate white and black queens.
