General says that the enemy has "gained support in the United States that gives him hope..."
that he can win politically that which he cannot win militarily."

Further that soldiers on the ground were "dismayed, and so am I, by recent unpatriotic acts at home."

Gen. William Westmoreland, senior U.S. commander in South Vietnam, speaking at a news conference 40 years ago this week.

Does this remind anyone else of something said more recently? Don't they come up with anything original? LBJ, a liberal democrat, was President. His escalation of this war had already killed hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese, over 7,000 GI's by that time.

Will we ever be able to create a different United States??

3. Yes very much so
...no never (politicians are great recyclers), and I sure hope so, but the fact that the country's been snookered by the same divisive propaganda and manipulative lies from 40 years ago is very disheartening in terms of ever effecting lasting change.

5. Vietnam was just another corporation war
Just like Iraq. All about selling arms and goods. You want a different United States and maybe more important a different world, take down international arms dealers and destroy all nuclear weapons, only then you might have a small chance at true change.

25. Evidently not.
My point being that some who actually serve in a wear can be fundamentally changed and understand the true horrors of such a conflict. They might be less inclined to use war as a convenient political option to further their domestic agenda. The George McGovern's and John Kerry's learned this lesson, obviously chickenhawks never do.

17. But consider, it means they are officially to the point of making excuses.
And shifting blame. About 1971 or 72 in VietNam terms, I think. And we are about to the end of the calls for "one more Friedman unit" too, I think.

History repeats itself the first time as tragedy and the second time as farce.

When the farce is war it is beyond tragic.

18. Game going badly? Start yelling at the refs
Blame the crowd for insufficient enthusiasm because your team couldn't hit water if it fell out of a boat. The hallmark of a lousy coach with an underachieving team. There's plenty of blame for everyone except the coach and the game plan.

22. I was a child during the Vietnam war - I'm sick of this happening again
These wars are destroying our country. I'm sick of the pathetic excuses and I'm especially sick of hearing that I'm a "traitor" for exercising my responsibilities as an adult citizen of this country - responsibilities that include criticizing the government when it is wrong.
