Griffith Press Secretary Resigns in Wake of Party Switch

By John McArdle | December 23, 2009 3:02 PM

Sean Magers, who had worked for Alabama Rep. Parker Griffith since before the freshman Congressman came to Capitol Hill, resigned his post as the press secretary on Wednesday afternoon, one day after Griffith switched parties and joined the Republican Conference.

Magers exit may be the beginning of a staff overhaul in Griffith's Congressional office as he begins his new life as a Republican Congressman. Griffith has already lost most of his political campaign team in the last 24 hours, including his pollster, media consultant, mail consultant and fundraising consultant. His Alabama-based general consultant, Main Street Strategies, is staying with him.

Magers began working for Griffith in April of 2008 when the former Democrat jumped into the open seat race to replace retiring Rep. Bud Cramer (D). Magers served as Griffith's communications director on the campaign and stayed on to serve as press secretary for the Congressman after the election.

Mager said he would be "pursuing other opportunities in D.C." but declined to comment further on his exit from Griffith's office.

You have your chance to reject Griffith from keeping his position. Make him a one-termer loser.

And while you're at it, ask him directly if Rahm "recruited" him for the position.. if so, then Rahm will be implicated on this strategy, and his ilk and DLC will be finally dead. And Al From in prison.

3. It's a LOT more fun working with a Majority member
Griffith is going to get a new, smaller office befitting his new status as the junior member of the minority party. He's probably also going to get committee reassignments, so if he was working in a committee or subcommittee he really liked, the House leadership will stick him in the Subcommittee on Swamp Gas or something. His staff will indeed get an overhaul; Magers probably figured that it wasn't worth his soul to suddenly be putting out press releases toeing the Republican party line.
