Can Someone Help Answer A Question For Me?
I have my suspicions about all this, but I was hoping someone who's more "dialed in" could either confirm or disprove them. In order to provide you with some background, you should know that my wife's father is a blatant cheerleader for the Republican Party. Everything they tell him to do, he does; everything they tell him to believe, he believes. He watches Faux News 24 hours a day (literally, since he's retired, all he does is sit at home with the TV on, and it's always tuned to Faux News) and looks for any opportunity he can find to drop their talking points into a conversation. He believes that George W. Bush is the best thing that ever happened to this country, and he does irrational things, like buy right-wing books despite the fact that he never reads books (just the local newspaper). In short, he's a common dupe/tool/lemming of the Republican Party. If Rush Limbaugh told people to cut off their hands, he'd be on his way out to the tool shed to get an axe right now. OK, so that's the background.

When my wife asked him what he wanted for Christmas a few weeks ago, the only thing he could come up with was the Susan Boyle CD. OK, most of you are probably saying, "Well, that doesn't sound all that unusual. Lots of people like her music." Except for one thing: my wife's father NEVER listens to music (in the house, it's nothing but TV tuned to Faux News, and in the car, it's nothing but right-wing talk radio), and I'm pretty certain that Susan Boyle's music wouldn't be his cup of tea anyway. So, when she told me this news, I initially was puzzled. Then I suspected he was just being true to his roots, and that someone on Faux News had told their viewers to all go out and buy the Susan Boyle CD for some strange reason. I still have my suspicions that this is one of those, "they told me to buy it and I must obey" kind of things, but I'm looking for some confirmation.

Does anyone here know what connection, if any, there is between Faux News, the right-wing, and the Susan Boyle CD? My gut tells me that there MUST be some connection.

4. Get him "Pleasure Victim" by Berlin and tell him Boyle is the lead singer.
Her name is actually Terri Nunn and her credits, I shit you not, are listed as "Vocals, BJs" on the album. The CD also has the extended version of "Sex". That should tickle his willie.

9. He Did, But My Wife Told Him She Refused To Buy It For Him
Edited on Tue Dec-22-09 01:17 PM by ChoppinBroccoli
Besides, if he waits until after Christmas, he'll be able to pick it up for a buck-and-a-half on the bargain table of any bookstore.

Last year, when he asked my wife what I wanted for Christmas, my wife told him I wanted Al Gore's book, and he told her he wasn't going to buy it. So turnabout's fair play.

And again, it makes even less sense, because he doesn't read books. He goes out and buys Bill O'Really?'s book and that one about how the entire Obama Administration is corrupt, etc., and he DISPLAYS them. He doesn't read them; he DISPLAYS them. They're nothing more than trophies to him.

8. What a strange question...
...I mean, I sympathize and all, given that the man listens to Fox News all day long.

But why on earth do you have suspicions regarding his gift preference? Many people were inspired by Susan Boyle's performances on BGT, and her debut performance was one of the most popular Youtube videos ever. Surely you are not implying that the whole thing was a right-wing setup from the get-go? No, I thought not.

So my friendly advice is, buy him the Susan Boyle CD, and be happy you can give him something he wants this Christmas, without shelling out your money for some piece of right-wing trash.

10. You Don't Understand
The only time this man shows any interest whatsoever in Pop Culture is when the right-wing screamers TELL him what to think. And there's no possible way he could have been exposed to her music any other way. As I said, he doesn't listen to the radio, the TV in his house never leaves Faux News, and he doesn't have access to the internet. Add it all up, and the only conclusion I could come to was that the right-wingers are pimping Susan Boyle. There's simply no other explanation for how he so much as knows her name.

15. Well, even if they are "pimping Susan Boyle"...
...at least she is a singer with some talent, who as far as I know has not expressed any political views -- and even if she had, she's a Brit so her views would be pretty irrelevant to our issues at the moment.

I say, just buy the darned CD and be happy it's something you need not argue with your FIL about.

Not trying to give you a hard time!

12. I found a clip on youtube.. She was on Fox News earlier this year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5ZBfiMv6Ak

They did a story on her and talked to her by phone. They were very complimentary towards her. I don't know of any other connection.

13. Buy it for him. Perhaps it will teach him not to listen to Beck.
He'll be terminally bored by it, especially if he doesn't normally listen to music.
