Poll question: Poll regarding the Recommend and Unrecommends.
I'm just wondering how frivolous people are getting with the unrecommends. I encourage you to participate in the poll so we can see a running total, but please, if you use the unrecommends liberally, please share with us your thought process for doing so.

1. Rather than take this poll, I unrec'd it.

2. LOL!
That's the spirit.

Do I get a prize if my post gets the most unrecommends?

6. +1 or is that -1
Not sure

What is the purpose of this poll? Some don't like it when they get unrecommended maybe.

Post it, if it is liked it will get rec if not it will either wither and die and if they hate it, they will unrec it.

NBD!

3. The 'Wannabe Moderator' choice is the main reason the unrec exists. To keep crap from rising. nt

7. man o man...
I'm so tired of reposting "Javaman's theorem on unrec'ing".

-if you start a thread regarding the unrec function, be prepared for it to be massively unrec'd.

-If you whine why one of your own threads didn't just make us all squirm with delight, then be prepared to be unrec'd.

-If you come across with an attempt to sound reasonable regarding the unrecing of one of your posts, be prepared to be unrec'd.

-If you shout, "I'M BEING SILENCED", be prepared to be unrec'd.

-If you feign ignorance as to why your post was unrec'd, be prepared to be unrec'd

And lastly...

-If you start a thread regarding unrec, be prepared to be unrec'd, flamed mercilessly, and alerted to the mods as being a freep, troll, moron, in need of a pizza, etc.

Just a few of the simple facts of posting about the unrec function.

Cheers!

15. Um no. I first posted this the very first day it came out.
whining about something is never good. And will only exact the full wrath of the internet griefers upon you.

If you like something rec it, if you don't unrec.

If you are a good thoughtful writer, you will get recs, if you are a crappy reactionary ego infused writer, you will get unrecs.

it's really quite simple.

it's the posters that feel the need to quench their unquenchable ego that makes it a problem.

22. You'll probably have to keep posting it because
there are always going to be lots of people who refuse to believe it's got anything to do with how interesting or informative their threads are.

No...it's always a huge TROLL PLOT

or the attack of the nasty "DU stalkers"

Always someone else's fault for whatever unrecs they get.

I personally don't give a hoot what ends up on the "Greatest Page" or how many recs a thread has. I look at the number of replies.

And I have only unrec'd a thread for the reasons you list above. Soliciting recs gets an automatic unrec from me. Whining, sniveling, and complaining about unrecs also gets an auto unrec from me, sometimes.

Otherwise, I don't really care.

People really need to find something to keep themselves busy instead of going all OCD over the unrec function....

Rec/Unrec has not affected my reading of DU one bit. I'll bet I'm more in line with the general DU population in this regard than you might think. To put it succinctly: I don't fucking care if your thread or anyone else's gets to the greatest page. These poutrage threads against unrec are a meaningless, pointless, and whiny pastime that crops up weekly around here.

12. I will unrec OPs which I believe contain logical fallacies,
are perceived by me to be in the wrong forum and mention something I have little or no interest in (sports, some crappy rock band), contain certain phrases (just sayin', pony), and on accident.

17. Conclusion of unscientific poll.
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 11:52 AM by The Backlash Cometh
50% of DUers are showing a high level of tolerance, giving people the freedom to express themselves without second guessing the poster's intentions.

20% are lazy-butts who are using the unrecommend for the wrong reason.

30% -- tough to generalize about this group. I'm sure they're well-intentioned, but if you use the unrecommends in such abundance number, I'm sure that some of your calls are the right ones, but there is a sliver of a chance that you may be taking yourself too seriously.

19. What is really needed, besides the excellent Unrec button, is a "reverse-ignore" feature.
An OP would have the choice of putting chronic axe-grinders and flame warriors - of which there is no shortage lately - on "reverse-ignore" which would prohibit those posters from participating in his or her OP. This would work the other way, too - you couldn't participate in a person you had on "reverse-ignore" OP's, either. To prevent abuse, there would be a 72 hour delay between taking someone *off* of "reverse-ignore" and your ability to participate in their threads, and vice-versa.

The flamage level would drop precipitously around here, I guarantee it.

20. Why are so many against unrecs but not against recs?
Takes two to tango so they say.

If unrec is bad, then so are the insane number of recs.

21. Because you need 5 recs to get on the Greatest page.
Maybe the answer is to limit unrecommends so that people are more discriminatory about using them?

23. Then you would have to limit recs as well.
Some posts get recc'ed to the greatest page simply becasue a mutual admiration society gets together and rec's each others posts.

I like the un-rec feature. I go to the top-ten page often, just to see the hot topics and the controversial ones.

I think it puts some excitement in a topic, and allows more input from people who don't always have time to post on a thread, but agree or disagree with the OP>

24. Seriously...what is the big deal about getting on the Greatest Page?
Do people get some huge prize or something?

Is it someone's 15 minutes of "fame"?

The climax of a person's Life Achievements?

I don't understand what is so all-fired important about the Greatest Page

:silly:

27. Some people don't have time to peruse the entire newsgroup.
The Greatest Page is all they have time for during short breaks during the day. I'm not saying I'm one of them...I'm just say'n.

25. I only unrecommended on the first day of the announcement and have no intention of doing it again.
I've decided to go this route because I don't believe in taking people's votes away, which is what the current system does without reflecting both rec and unrec votes.

I believe it does this by distorting D.U. reality via the major forum's page treating threads with 200 recs and 205 unrecs with the same regard as threads with 205 unrecs and 0 recs.

Furthermore this <0 symbol eliminates visible accountability of most any rec or unrec vote on a given thread, I can either rec or unrec your thread and if that symbol doesn't change, I couldn't tell you with certainty whether my vote was counted or not.

I believe this adverse dynamic will become particularly acute engendering even greater resentment during the heat of the primaries.

Thanks for the thread, The Backlash Cometh.
