A Rhetorical Question about Smoking (tobacco, not pot).
If smoking is your personal choice, why would you intentionally make the wrong choice?

7. Just another way of asking what the OP asks.
IMO there is nothing more stupid than to start smoking..

2. Smoking, drinking, eating
It's all a personal choice, but take a look around and you'll see the majority of Americans are making the wrong choice.

3. Since your name is David 13...
a proper answer would depend upon your age. Are you 13?

Otherwise, it is just another choice I and others made.

4. LOL. So true.
Furthermore, I am willing to wager that the fumes and smoke from fast food joints and the gases released in furniture kill more people than tobacco does.

5. Since auto accidents kill 50,000 people per year,
why would you choose to drive a car?

See, I can ask stupid questions, too...

6. That's not actually a rhetorical question.
But, that's OK. I know you were bored this morning and couldn't think of anything worthwhile to write..

We understand.

8. Since it's a rhetorical question, I guess I'm not allowed to answer.
So I'll just say that I like turtles.

10. Tobacco is a highly addictive drug which most users begin before the age of 18
Recent research has shown that the portion of the brain that is involved in risk assessment isn't fully formed into well into young adulthood.

Of course I expect all of this misses some point or another you're attempting to make...

15. Congrats! I haven't had a cig. since 1/7/2002. It *CAN* be done...

All the best to you.

My only advice to you is this: you don't have to "quit forever" this moment. You only have to choose not to smoke a cigarette this moment. I used to look at it in the former way, and it seemed impossible. Then I started looking at it like the latter, and I was able to do it. Hope that makes sense!

17. Thanks, getting easier every day.
Didn't plan on that day. Got a touch of pluracy and every smoke made me feel like 2 big guys were holding down while 5 others were kicking me in the chest. Quitting, all of a sudden, was smarter than starting back then.

11. It used to be KQQL now its not...advertising, peer pressure & the movies..
all contributed to making a bad choice worse. I smoked for over 30yrs until I saw the light.

14. You choose before you know, then you're addicted
I've smoked since I was fifteen. That's when I "chose" to smoke, though even that "choice" was conditioned by any number of factors. Now, undoubtedly I also choose every single time I light a cigarette, but the concept of free choice (really, a mystification of late medieval humanism) has never been very good at dealing with the body, much less the problems of addiction. So it's a "choice" and not a choice at once. Anyone who claims that smoking is a simple "personal choice" is dealing in complete mystification and ideology. It's far more complicated than that, which is why people make the "wrong choice."

18. Same reason people have sex with strangers, drink, don't use condoms, drive cars, live in cities
and so on.

We like it (well, not the sex with strangers part for me personally, I like to know their first name....) ;)
