Iraq-themed spam - a new one on me.
This may be old news to people who, unlike me, look at their spam now and again before deleting it. I rarely do, but today I did and found this gem:

Subject : MATTER OF URGENCY

Dear Friend,

I am John England ,an Army contractor attached to the US Military force in Iraq. The reason why I’m explaining my findings to you is to seek for your assistance to enable you contribute immensely to the actualization of my dream.

On the 17th day of April 2007, me and my group of 4 men we were alerted on the need of some reconstruction works in Haifa Street, a long thoroughfare of high-rise buildings built and occupied by Saddam Hussein when he was alive here in Baghdad. Immediately we proceeded to the site and as we commence work to our utmost surprise we discovered an underground bunker in one of the buildings. Upon investigation of the bunker to our surprise we discovered two boxes safely hidden and sealed, I told my men to open the boxes in order to find out the contents and when they were opened to our amazement the boxes contained some US Dollars which amounted to $14.2M after I and two of the men counted them.

I however instructed them to keep this in high secrecy so that we can have the money to our selves, they all agreed to the plan and we were going to get the money out of the country but first we had to hide the money in a safe and untraceable location.

I am now in desperate need of a "Reliable and Trustworthy" person like you who would receive, secure and protect these boxes containing the US Dollars for me up on till my assignment elapses here.We cannot leave the boxes here in Iraq for any reason since Iraq is getting unsafe and dangerous everyday. I assure and promise to give you 10% of this fund, however feel free to negotiate what you wish to have as your percentage in this deal.

Please assure me of your keeping this topmost secret within you so that my job would not be jeopardized.

My Sincere regards,

John England

Oops! Looks like I let the cat out of the bag. Well, if anyone's interested...

2. Probably the only true part
is "Iraq is getting unsafe and dangerous everyday."

I usually forward these to spam@uce.gov. Don't know if any of these charlatans get caught but it's worth a try.

4. There's also the Dinar investment scam
That one can see on many Conservative sites and blogs.

This guy is running around promising that if you invest in the Dinar, you can get a 1000% return on it or something.

I wonder how many RW'ers have actually signed up.

5. That is funny.
I always wonder who would be taken in by these "I have a ton of money but can't trust anyone I know so I chose you, a total stranger, at random, please help" things.

6. That's one of the many variants of the "Spanish Prisoner Swindle":

Here's a brief description: http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3306

The most frequent examples are termed "Nigeriann Scam". Over the past 3 years, I've received about 400 of those!

On edit: Here's a somewhat better explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Prisoner there was a thread on DU a while back about a couple of clowns in England who had turned the tables on one scamster. They strung him along for a few months, playing a few practical jokes on him. They reduced him to an enraged idiot, uttering obscenities.
