DU needs PEACE.
we all need to work together.
we are all individuals with individual opinions and beliefs.
the one thing that brings us together is that we want better for our fellow man/woman.
we see the injustices against a great many of our fellow citizens, and non-citizens of the world alike. we want things to be better.

we must use our skepticism of our president to hold not only our leader accountable, but to hold ourselves accountable.

we must use our unwavering support for our president to show him that we have his back, and that great things are possible with us in his corner.

we must have PEACE with ourselves. a happy medium. both sides are integral parts of DU. we keep each other in check because FACTS are important to us. the personal desire and drive to disprove each other, and the attacks, are getting us nowhere. just as the partisan attacks in congress make it impossible to get anywhere, so it goes here as well.

we need to focus on dialog, accuracy, our desire to make a difference and inform each other, and we should do so with respect. i've been coming here since '04. finally joined in '06. and in the last few months i have purposely avoided discussing many topics after viewing some of the replies thereafter.

i implore all DUers to please think about this before posting yet more tedious flame-bait, because IT IS COMING FROM BOTH SIDES.

PEACE and RESPECT. for ourselves. for each other.

thanks for listening.

3. I LOL'd... Not that I don't agree with you...
It's funny how when GWB was Pres, War was so evil and we were all against it.

Now that Obama is running the Wars somehow they turned into good wars! Ahh the hypocracy...

Although peace here at DU would be great you need to be more realistic.

Our party is split in 2 and is headed for the amount of dysfunction that we see the GOP suffering from.

Unless like your hope you posted we can pull together... which is where I LOL...

Nice Dream though...

9. I think that some idealism is necessary when tempered with reality
I also have some minor disagreement with your statement about the wars. I know there are people who seem to think that President Obama can do no wrong and I think that those who think that are unrealistic in their assessment. He has done plenty of things that I disagree with, including escalating Afghanistan. The disagreement I have with the statement is that you equate support for Obama's handling of the wars with reaction to Bush's initiation and handling of the wars and call it hypocrisy. I don't see it as hypocrisy but as allowing the president to do what he thinks is needed to extract us from the situation. I have not seen anyone cheering for the wars now that President Obama is in charge. I have seen people saying that they will reserve judgment for a bit and want to see what his strategy will achieve to get us out of there without leaving a completely unstable region.

I don't see most things as either/or. There are complexities to the decisions that are being made that need to be considered. That does not mean that we should not be critical or voice our displeasure, but in the same respect, we should not trash people for having a wide range of points of view in a party. That is the way the Democratic party has always been. It has been our strength and our weakness to have a large tent. If we try to "purify" the party like the conservatives are trying to do with the GOP, then you are right, we will end up just like them.

So, a little idealism in wanting to come together on important issues is necessary to keep the coalition together rather than writing its obituary.

10. The U.S. lets war criminals go free and torture camps go unpunished
and there are 100s of people here that support it while throwing women, gays and anyone else into the category of "doom and gloomers" and "haters". The same people also support criminal banks and criminal for-profit health insurance.

You can go ahead and make peace with them and their republican counterparts.

14. no one is saying they need to give in to each other. just a change in tune.
the dialog needs to be elevated to be more respectful. prove your case. support it with facts.

find a way to understand each other's perspective. acceptance of each other's perspective is not automatic, nor should it ever be. we're above this.

don't stop pointing out things we disagree with. we just seem to be lacking a little finesse these days. it's deteriorating into nonsense for the most part.

lies and false information should always be exposed, no matter which side it's coming from.

thank you for your contribution!

22. Nonsense. Most people on the planet now, and throughout history, never experience war.
Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 04:17 PM by Tierra_y_Libertad
We are no more warlike than any other species. The vast majority of people never go to war. And, the vast majority of people, who suffer from war aren't warriors.
