ICEBERG!!!!

A NASA satellite image of iceberg B17B floating between Australia and Antarctica. A monster iceberg nearly twice the size of Hong Kong island has been spotted drifting towards Australia in what scientists called a once-in-a-century event.

1. In a century so young, on a planet so hot, I suspect we'll see more of these this century. . .
(for awhile, at least -- until the supply runs out) . . .

12. How can you see something in between Australia and Antarctica from NZ?
I'm guessing that's not the same iceberg.

16. You can't see it from NZ
The 'berg is passing Macquarie Island which is Australian territory.
In fact the island is 1,466 km SSE of Tasmania and similar distance from NZ.

17. Can't be the same one... Can it?
The proportions are all wrong. If this one's smallest dimention horizontallly is five miles, then that spire has to be a couple miles
high. And since the vast bulk of the thing is submerged...

15. I thought of it, also. They can tow it as close to Australia as
possible and anchor it... then pump the water out of the center of it as it melts

Stabilize it?

EDIT: I read in another thread that it's about 12 miles by 5 miles. (19km x 8km)

13. Party on the iceberg cancelled
A change of weather has melted the hopes of some Australians who were planning to hold a party on an iceberg which was drifting towards New Zealand.

The flotilla of icebergs, which had been drifting towards New Zealand, is now being blown away from the country by strong winds.

Australians Phil Meadows and Earl Roberts wanted to helicopter out to one of the icebergs, carve an ice bar and stage a party.
