1. Strawman: The disputed claim is whether Kucinich is comparable to conservative Republicans
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 12:06 AM by mcablue
Strawman.

Earlire it was said that Kucinich had an alliance with conservatives (Republicans).

Now please start a thread comparing THEIR percentage of pro-Democratic votes (which likely hovers 10-15%) to Kucinich's 92%.

Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 01:19 AM by sabrina 1
between someone who votes for something simply because it's the right thing to do, and someone who does it for the wrong reasons, such as 'party loyalty'.

You're wasting your time really. Most people do get why a person with a conscience votes the way they do and why someone with no conscience votes for political reasons.

Your attempt to discredit Kucinich this way fails with anyone who can think. It's like saying that FDR and Stalin had a lot in common because they both hated Hitler (with credit to the DUer who made that comparison).

Your argument is disingenuous and makes no point. Why don't you attack him on the issues he stands for? I always ask Kucinich haters to explain what it is they disagree with him about, but they never answer. Instead they all do what you just did. Try to avoid discussing the issues he raises and veer off into a virtual ditch trying to make some kind of point, which they never do.

He has been right on just about all of the major issues of the past eight years. If Congress and the Republicans actually HAD voted with him, guess what, this country would be in excellent shape right now. But sadly, Democrats voted for Bush's agenda so often it was difficult to believe they were supposed to be the opposition party. Eg, one third of Senate Dems voting with Republicans for the Military Commissions Act (how did you feel about that, btw, AGAINST Habeas Corpus).

I don't why it is so hard to simply admit that he was right on most of the important issues, and still is. The fruitless effort to try to justify what Democrats have supported by claiming Kucinich should have been 'loyal to the Party' is more than a bit creepy, frankly.

He does get under the skin of the party loyalists for some reason though.

Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 07:38 AM by HamdenRice
AMY GOODMAN: The War Appropriations Bill almost didn’t get passed. There was a lot of opposition in Congress. But what is your sense of what will happen now?
...
Do you find actually on the media—I bumped into you yesterday when you were heading into Fox in Washington, D.C.—that you are making more common cause with those on the right who are actually saying that the struggle is here at home and that we shouldn’t be in Afghanistan spending this money?

REP. DENNIS KUCINCH: The answer to that is yes. and I think we need to look for common cause with people with whom we may have a different way of looking at the world. I cite as an example Congressman Rohrabacher from California. Another example, Congressman Duncan. Congressman Chaffetz from <Utah>. They’re all challenging the war.

The Cato Institute has issued what I think is a very reasoned approach towards getting out of Afghanistan. We need to look for allies across the boards here, and we have to get away from the old thinking that pigeonholes any of us into left/right, liberal/conservative.

Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 09:44 AM by mcablue
Kucinich spoke of no other issue. If you look at the big picture (which is what the voting record is about, Kucinich is (of course) not allied to these far-right Republicans, who most of the time are at odds with Kucinich.

By the way, in this agreement, Kucinich didn't turn right. The Republicans turned left.

Cherry-picking is a bad form of argument.

Kucinich is often one of the lone votes against bills that get wide bipartisan support despite the fact that they are bad bills, he often votes against the Republicans when the rest of the Democrats are voting with them.

I am not a Democrat. I am a progressive. That is why I voted for Nader in 2000 and 2004. I voted for Obama in 2008 and all it has meant is TARP, more troops in Afghanistan, and a health bill which will be stalled into the next decade.

And the case was so strong that you have not even once addressed the fact that Kucinich and conservatives have overwhelmingly different

You conveniently compare Dennis Kucinich with other Democrats, as if that had been disputed.

#1: Issues. What is the reps record on issues? DK beats the pack.

#2: Character. How corruptible is the rep? DK comes with no strings attached.

#3: Party loyalty: Good, except when the party is wrong. Which it has been for much of the last 9 years.

44. The biggest point here is not a ranking but a DU double standard
DK is "voting his conscience" for voting the way he always has and never pretended he would do otherwise, but Blue Dogs are portrayed as "bought and paid for Republican shills" for voting the way they always have and never pretended they would do otherwise. Appqarently to some here it is impossible to have an honest and principled diverging opinion from Dem orthodozy more towards the center or right, but perfectly fine and indeed noble to do so if you are further to the left. Obvious intellectual dishonesty. Basically DU has a IOKIYADK attitude towards kicking over the party.

and millions of people often agree with the Blue Dog philosophy. Is it impossible that the elected folks likewise agreed with these positions in the first place and vote accordingly? I am unaware of any great trend of Blue Dogs arising only after they started out as Greens before they got the big money.
