Charles Foster Johnson Won't Drive off a Cliff

by Charles Lemos, Tue Dec 01, 2009 at 12:03:40 AM EST

The conservative blogger Charles Foster Johnson, founder of Little Green Footballs and co-founder of Pajamas Media, has parted ways with the right. Tonight he blogged on the matter outlining his rationale:

1. Support for fascists, both in America (see: Pat Buchanan, Robert Stacy McCain, etc.) and in Europe (see: Vlaams Belang, BNP, SIOE, Pat Buchanan, etc.)

2. Support for bigotry, hatred, and white supremacism (see: Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter, Robert Stacy McCain, Lew Rockwell, etc.)

3. Support for throwing women back into the Dark Ages, and general religious fanaticism (see: Operation Rescue, anti-abortion groups, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, the entire religious right, etc.)

4. Support for anti-science bad craziness (see: creationism, climate change denialism, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, James Inhofe, etc.)

5. Support for homophobic bigotry (see: Sarah Palin, Dobson, the entire religious right, etc.)

6. Support for anti-government lunacy (see: tea parties, militias, Fox News, Glenn Beck, etc.)

7. Support for conspiracy theories and hate speech (see: Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Birthers, creationists, climate deniers, etc.)

8. A right-wing blogosphere that is almost universally dominated by raging hate speech (see: Hot Air, Free Republic, Ace of Spades, etc.)

9. Anti-Islamic bigotry that goes far beyond simply criticizing radical Islam, into support for fascism, violence, and genocide (see: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, etc.)

10. Hatred for President Obama that goes far beyond simply criticizing his policies, into racism, hate speech, and bizarre conspiracy theories (see: witch doctor pictures, tea parties, Birthers, Michelle Malkin, Fox News, World Net Daily, Newsmax, and every other right wing source)
And much, much more. The American right wing has gone off the rails, into the bushes, and off the cliff.

I won't be going over the cliff with them.

Johnson who is also a respected jazz musician started blogging in 2001. In a recent interview, Johnson cited that the main reason that he has parted ways with "right wing blogosphere . . . is that most of them have succumbed to Obama Derangement Syndrome. "

Johnson goes on to note the following:

One "nontroversy" after another, followed by the outrage of the day, followed by conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory, all delivered in breathless, angry prose that's just wearying and depressing to read.

It's not just the economic issues either. I've never been on board with the anti-science, anti-Enlightenment radical religious right. Once I began making my opinions known on issues like creationism and abortion, I realized that there just wasn't very much in common with many of the bloggers on the right. And then, when most of them decided to fall in and support a blogger like Robert Stacy McCain, who has neo-Nazi friends, has written articles for the openly white supremacist website American Renaissance, and has made numerous openly racist statements on the record ... well, I was extremely disappointed to see it, but unfortunately not surprised.

There are lots of very worrisome trends with today's GOP, but it is a very welcomed development to have Charles Foster Johnson offer a powerful voice of reason.

1. This is amazing.
Thanks for posting.

I read Little Green Footballs a few times just to see what he had to say. I lost interest quickly.

As they succumb to further extremism, the GOP deserves to lose more people like him. And they will.

2. 11. Republicon's radical fiscal profligacy
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 06:33 AM by SpiralHawk
Republicons borrowed-and-spent America deep, deep, deep into debt, and drove our eocnomy into the crapper for years to come -- the antithesis of the so-called 'conserativism' that they falsely claim.

3. 12. The preposterous hypocrisy of chickenhawks starting wars with lies
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 06:42 AM by SpiralHawk
Hello? Following an AWOL 'commander-in-chief' and a VP war profiteer with five (5) military deferments into a republicon oil-profits war against a country with no WMD that had taken no action against us, and represented no threat? Hello?

Hello?

Being further goaded into that needless war by a republicon claque of overpaid chickehawk propgandists like Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly and Beck? Hello?

Hello?

No wonder this guy quit the republicon party...no wonder.

Why would anyone hang with them, unless they wanted America to fail?

8. 13. The Complete Inability To See Reality
Everything the radical right has predicted, for nearly every area of life, has turned out to be wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong. Yet, they stick to those simpleminded perspectives without regard to repeated failure.

Support for them would be like supporting Ted Bundy AFTER you knew what he did.

5. History has a very good example of what's happening to the GOP, The Federalists
The Federalists went off the rails, especially over Madison. The Federalist party died.

This lead directly to the eventual schism within the Democratic-Republican Party between the Adams faction and the Jacksonians.

It's becoming more likely such an eventuality will play itself out with the Republicans going over the cliff, then eventually the more conservative elements of the Democratic Party splitting off from the more liberal side, but overall, the death of the GOP and conservative movement will ultimately move the nation to the left, thus making many of the currently politically nonviable ideas and initiatives (such as single payer) completely possible within a generation.

6. John Cole at Balloon-Juice flipped from conservative to liberal several years ago..
Balloon-Juice.com is part of Pajamas Media, there are ads for Anne Coulter and Michelle Malkin all over it but the owner and the commentariat are basically Dirty Fucking Hippies now..

In fact their motto is: Consistently wrong since 2002..

to try and take the sting out of reality...

People with common sense and honor have long ago, or are now, bailing from the failing Republicon ship. No one of honor wants to be associated with the corrupt crap they are selling.

9. I think it's amazing
Considering 6 years ago someone created a quiz called "Little Green Footballs or Late German Fascists" in response to the right wing extremist quotes of 2004 on the website

The right wing has become bat-shit insane. I'm not surprised to see people like Johnson of LGF are abandoning ship there are others such as David Brock and Arianna Huffington.

I really hope this bodes well for us for next year after seeing that poll posted by DailyKos.

Reminds me of:

"What makes a good man go neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

15. LGF actually started as a moderately left wing blog
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 10:04 AM by RFKHumphreyObama
If you search through the archives of the blog back to 2001, you will find very little in terms of political content there but those posts that do mention GWB were generally scornful/critical of him. Johnson claimed to have voted for Gore in 2000. Then Johnson got a case of the 9/11 syndrome -see also Dennis Miller, David Zucker, Ron Silver et all -and transformed himself completely. So, while I didn't expect this, it's not surprising that he's not as out there as some of the more radical elements of the GOP

17. Good for him... we need less vitriol on both sides
Not to say the center is right; it's usually dead wrong as far as the people are concerned, and only caters to the DC establishment, corporaions, lobbies, entrenched parties, etc. But if people on the right are beginning to see how they are being manipulated, and they begin to reject that, maybe we can sit down, as people, and start to have some real dialogue, even if we can't agree on most policies.

it seems very sane, very unlike other right wing blogs. It looks like he got fed up with the right wing propaganda and corporate run front groups. :o
