The 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season ends at midnight and, if coastal Louisiana residents have nothing else to be thankful for this year, they should be thankful that it was an uneventful one.

Not a single hurricane threatened the Louisiana coast this season, where many still are picking up the pieces from the 2005 and 2008 hurricane seasons.

That's a good thing, because little has been done to protect Southwest Louisiana since the 2005 storms.

"There hasn't been any progress. Somebody keeps flickering the light at the end of the tunnel, but nothing's really come out," said Sherill Sagrera of the Vermilion Parish Coastal Restoration Advisory Committee.

The 2005 hurricane season brought the one-two punch of Hurricane Katrina to Southeast Louisiana in August followed by Hurricane Rita in Southwest Louisiana in September. Between the two hurricanes, not a single coastal parish went unscathed.
