How are people watching posts close enough to notice when a rec/unrec changes the score 1 point?
I've always wondered about this. I see alot of posts that say things like, "Why would someone unrec this?" Early on, when unrecs can bring a post under 0, I understand. But there are seriously posts up for day/days that people notice a single unrec. Are there DU'ers that are literally sitting online ALL DAY staring at a SINGLE POST watching the recs and unrecs add up?

1. Web Results 1 - 10 of about 256 from democraticunderground.com for "Why would someone unrec this".
Quick Google search shows hundreds of these.

People are

2. Sometimes the unrecs get in there right at the beginning.
Sometimes people rec a thread an the number doesn't change. What gets people upset is when a thread that is seemingly unrecable like the names and pictures of the 4 cops that are killed gets unrecced. I think it's created a genuine disgust and distrust with some of the people that post here.

3. I hope not. But I did experiment with this one.
Since it showed a less-than-zero, I recced it; and that brought it up to zero. So I DID see a 1-point change.

4. In all honesty
I don't pay attention to either, unless the recs are really high. Then maybe I might click on the thread if I haven't already. But the whole rec/unrec thing isn't something I bother with much. I might rec a really good post but I think I have only hit unrec a couple of times and that's when the post seemed trollish.

5. why does anyone care about rec/unrec at all?
It's ridiculous. If it causes so much drama then maybe it's better to just not have a greatest page.

6. Some people invest their entire ego into their Internet Post
And apparently DO watch it as closely as a mother watches her baby.

7. It's really a sad obsession. You have people within the 1st minutes of an OP
complaining when it might get an UnRec. No matter what the topic, people are allowed to have differing opinions.

The most important thing that a poster can do to make a thread continue to be viewed is to kick it by responding. After 24 hours Rec/UnRec doesn't make a difference anymore, but kicking helps.

Also, we all know and have seen the DUers who can post anything and others will fall all over themselves to Rec the thread as the most brilliant post ever made.

9. Ask not "how?"

Ask "Why?"

The OCD, it is strong in DU.

10. My theory:
(this doesn't apply to all, just some i have noticed)

There is a group here that can't stand unrec because it keeps their woo views from the front page. They decided to unrec everything, and also to cry LOUDLY when their groups posts were unrecd in a cynical attempt to get the unrec function eliminated.

11. The unrec thing sucks. I never use it, nor do I like it.
Who's idea was it anyway?

13. Probably anyone who is a thread-starter
You compose a thread, post it, and immediately realize you forgot to spellcheck, so you click on it to edit quickly before someone comments on your creative spelling , and within the 15 seconds elapsed between posting & editing, some dear soul has hit the unrec..oddly in less time that would be necessary to even READ the post:rofl:

that's how

14. I don't get why people ask that question, either, but, you don't have to watch closely to ask it.
Doesn't matter if it's a new post or has been here for days, if there is a <0 there, then at least one person un-recced it. Doesn't necessarily mean they are seeing one individual un-rec.

15. Some people are just plain anal.
Same goes for noting/commenting on a persons post count, not having a 'profile', a persons 'join date', placing posters on 'ignore' etc.

16. It's really quite simple.
When I click on "General Discussion", I scan down the page to look for posts that might interest me. As a matter of habit, I also scan the columns on the right that show # of replies, # of recs, and # of views.

Once I've clicked on a topic and either silently read it or post a response, I click back to main GD page and scan the page again for another topic to read. In the process, I also notice when the numbers in the columns on the right have changed, so I'll notice if the # of recs has gone down on a particular topic. If an OP has gone down from 26 recs to 24 recs since the last time I scanned the page, then it's apparent that at least 2 people have unrec'd that OP.

I find it interesting to watch the flow and ebb of recs on a particular OP. If it's an OP with which I either strongly agree or strongly disagree, I'll admit that I get some satisfaction in seeing it either rec'd up or rec'd down -- sort of a personal affirmation that others share my opinion.

The only thing that actually bothers me though, is seeing somebody's post about a completely non-controversial topic get an unrec right off the bat. To me that's evidence that there are some pathetic anti-social trolls here who do nothing but automatically unrec EVERY post as soon as one shows up.

I'd like to see those people either heavily sanctioned or booted off.
