Four things Obama can do right now to re-intensify the Democratic base
Edited on Mon Nov-30-09 05:26 PM by WI_DEM
Most of us have seen the PPP poll indicating that the Democratic base is lacking enthusiasm looking ahead to 2010. Luckily the election is still nearly a year away and the President and Democrats in Congress can do Four key things right now that will enthuse the Democratic base and win support (I would guess) among many independents as well:

1) Publicly announce that he will accept NO HCR bill without a robust Public Option. State emphatically that this is a top priority of his and it must be done this year and it's a Democratic Party priority and he expects those who are in the Democratic caucus to allow the bill to come to a final vote (meaning no filibuster with the GOP) and in the final vote they can vote their consciences. If they do vote to filibuster the party will take action against these Democrats.

2) He could announce a time table towards leaving Afghanistan in his FIRST TERM and accelerate the pull-out from Iraq which is scheduled for September of 2010.

3) The President can announce that his top legislative battle for 2010 will be a Huge Jobs Program. He must make clear (he has already but he needs to keep it up) that rising unemployment is unacceptable and that we must stem that tide. Furthermore the more people working the more they can spend and that will accelerate an economic recovery.

4) The President could boldly announce that he is sending legislation to repeal DOMA and will end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

I should state that I have been and still am a strong Obama supporter, and I think ultimately he will succeed, but I think he sometimes is too detached for his own good and ocassionally needs to show some passion and take on the conservative elements in the party.

1. The sooner the better.
Most of my Dem friends are really disillusioned. I'm still supportive of Obama..but I'm very disappointed in his leadership..especially on HCR.

4. Same here, a lot of people are getting disillusioned. I even got some republicans to
vote for him. I'm hearing a lot of independents are really disillusioned. I wish Obama the best and want him to succeed, but I see/hear disillusionment building and that is just fact.

25. so keep feeding the flames of disillusionment and ignore the incredible accomplishments
of the most brilliant first term since Roosevelt? That's self-defeating garbage.

6. Why would he want to reintensify the Democratic base? We're nothing but a pain in his ass!
Whereas, if Republicans win in 2010, Obama will have a built-in excuse for passing his center-right, big donor-pleasing agenda

7. For one thing Pelosi and Reid and democrats in congress don't want to lose their
majorities and the perks that come with it.

8. He's about to re-intensify the base
Perhaps not quite in the direction any of us would like, but it'll be fairly intense nonetheless.

10. someone better peg politicians down on the meaning of "robust"
To some(many?), it has nothing to do with creating real competition. They'll likely pat themselves on the back and claim they got a robust PO, and you'll be left scratching yourself...

11. I don't need to be re-intensified. We don't need whining from the disappointed, we need
fighting in the trenches and people who appreciate the accomplishments and keep pushing for more. Less "disappointment" addiction, more historical memory and vigor.

18. Sorry bud, but when I stand up for equal rights for my family
against religious bigotry, that is not whining. What you are doing is whining, complaining that others will not join the War and Discrimination follies. Your entire lexicon is revolting. I've got historical memory enough to never stand for more war, and I remember Obama's bigot preachers speaking againt my family. I also remember your sort, which equates a righteous fight for human equality as 'whining' while also demanding appreciation. Talk about whining, you want to be appreciated for bigotry? Get real, pal.

23. now THAT's how to energize the base - tell them that THEY don't matter
and if they are fighting for something as simple and basic a human right as EQUAL RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW for their family you tell them that they are helping the republicans....

:eyes:

Real compassionate and helpful there bos1.

24. "disappointment" is latest Repub talking point. Keeping behind the most effective progressive prez
in memory will forward human rights, not preaching bogus disappointment

26. "most effective progressive prez in memory"? Details please!
What progressive action has he taken? Please - I would love to know.

Closed Gitmo? Closed all black sites (no)? Accelerated bringing the troops home from Iraq?
Signed executive order repealing DADT?

Please detail the progressive actions that Obama has undertaken.

28. because you have no facts to back up your outlandish claims. Really.
Just because he is better than bush, and better than mccain/palin does not mean he is "progressive" - in fact I seriously doubt anyone else would use that adjective for Obama.

I am asking you how you justify calling him the "most effective progressive prez in memory"? It shouldn't be that hard. Assuming you know what "progressive" means.

and it is too early to say what will come of Health Care.
