His boots will probably touch the ground in Afghanistan around the time Obama makes the official announcement tomorrow.

6. the son of a fellow water-board member is deploying in December
But I don't know that I'd call him a friend. I kinda just started serving on the waterboard in May. Still, that is only one degree of separation.

7. my partner's youngest son joined the Marines two weeks ago....
Still in high school-- he'll report in August. I presume he'll be sent as cannon fodder somewhere, if not Afghanistan, but we're thinking Afghanistan is most likely. It's what he wants-- he'd favor escalating to Vietnam levels if that would increase his likelihood of combat. He's SIXTEEN, for pity's sake. His mom is heart broken, but she signed his enlistment papers-- she can't stop him, in the end, and won't risk alienating him. The Marines have been recruiting him since middle school (he's a Young Marine).

Is it a given that no one here is currently serving? Granted we seem to be few and far between but still...

16. My girlfriend's son
who I've known since he was a young child. He already did a tour in Iraq. More recently, he got married and bought a house.

When they first told me he signed up for the "opportunities," I was leery. But since her ex was career military and others in her family are enlisted, I was as supportive as possible as a friend.

She's scared as hell, and I don't blame her.

20. that's very much the situation my GF and I are in....
Edited on Mon Nov-30-09 03:34 PM by mike_c
The boy is sixteen though, and utterly romanticizes military life. He's been a Young Marine for years and he excelled at it. That bit has been very good for his overall growth, I think, but DAMN! Now he has enlisted. His parents can only stop him for so long (and his father actively encourages his military aspirations, so his mom had to choose). He reports in August.

It keeps changing, including his job - he was a tank driver, then told he would be working convoy security most likely, now he has no idea....
