Poll question: Why Afghanistan?
They say we must fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here.

Is that true?

6. I don't think it is either.
We aren't fighting a "them" we are fighting an "it". Terrorism is a tactic used by individuals or small groups in order to attempt to impose their ideas on a larger population. It is a law enforcement problem. If you use the logic of fighting "them" over there, then we should invade many more countries than Afghanistan. The problem is that our "war on terror" only serves to fuel hatred for the US in the places we are trying to "save".

Shitting in someone's back yard to save yourself the water is not a good strategy. The shit will eventually come back to you.

9. I wonder
What have we stopped them from doing over here by fighting them over there?

Hasn't the government over here learned the lesson?
Or is Homeland Security, flight restrictions, and wiretapping not enough?

23. I don't think we have stopped anything by fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq
It is a false equivalency to assume that our actions in Afghanistan and Iraq are related to the fact that there has not been another 9/11 type attack on the continental US. The initial 9/11 attack was a result of years of planning by the attackers, inexperience or incompetence on the part of law enforcement here, and a huge amount of luck (for lack of a better word)in favor of the attackers. Since then, we have become more vigilant and yes, surrendered many freedoms for the sake of feeling secure. Our geography still protects us from much of the danger as well.

The government is not a unified entity, it is a bunch of squabbling agencies who are fighting to justify their existence and their budgets. Stating that our military is somehow keeping all of the throngs of terrorists who are just waiting to hit us, at bay, is just another attempt at justifying the billions we are spending fighting over there. The truth is that we don't know what, if anything is being planned or stopped, or whatever.

What we do know for sure is that getting us out of Iraq and Afghanistan will result in no more of our military men and women being killed and fewer of our tax dollars going to fund them dying and killing.

I thought OperationMindcrime got banned

Why? The answer would have to be the same as always. Money. I've given up on thinking that any war has anything to do with freedom, or safety, or protection. When you peel back all the layers it's always about money, power and control.

I almost miss that moniker.

He'll be back.

Meanwhile, what's the old saying: You have to spend money to make money?

Certainly much money has been made by our fighting them over there.. or anywhere. It is a looking more and more like a 'For Profit' adventure.

10. Some FReeper shouted that at me on election day 2004.
He stopped me in a parking lot after seeing the bumper stickers on my car. I'd heard quite enough of Bush*'s empty quotes, and I just laughed at him. The point is, especially now, before committing any more troops anywhere, to find out exactly where "they" are...

12. Yeah
The talk shows are full of freepers and their ilk all telling us that the way to save us is to fight them over there.

And here I thought we were past that.

13. Eh?
One man's junk is another man's treasure.

The meme is believed by too many people. So this poll is an attempt to fracture that meme. Maybe someone better than I can word it better?

Certainly the meme needs to be destroyed?

19. Alas
Not everyone disbelieves the meme. Very few actually. They think we have to fight, and to some degree they are correct. So, to those, I ask: over here, or over there. Where would we be more successful?

Shoot, if there were nothing to worry about, we'd not even need our cops.

21. Well
President Obama seems to think that we need to fight them over there.
And here. Patriot act, military commissions, etc.

It is bogus. The whole damn thing is bogus. Yet we have many DUers, and all the freepers, itching for a fight, but they can't even tell us why.

26. the correct quetion would have been whether we have to fight them there so we don't have to fight
them here, or whether that's a bullshit choice.

The Taliban can't and have no reason to come here and there are about 100 al Qaeda left in Afghanistan and 300 more in Pakistan. If we cut their support from the Saudi and Pakistani governments, we wouldn't even have to worry about those?
