I woke to a different world Sunday morning, a world without my beloved Stephanie in it. She passed away Saturday evening at about 8:00. She fought a long hard battle, (nearly 12 years), but in the end, melanoma proved to be too much for her. She was comfortable and at peace at the end, her mother and a dear friend at her side.

We were married for 24 years, and I had known her for half my life. She was my best friend and severest critic. She was also the bravest person I have ever known. I will miss her so much.

Stay out of the hot sun, don't use tanning beds, and get regular checks with a good dermatologist.

I wish I could offer you encouragement, something. But I feel certain that now it would ring hollow.

My own wife died one and a half years ago, right next to me, in bed, as we slept. She had a heart attack. When I woke up, I reflexively reached out to touch her, as I would any time I woke, and she was cold. Few things are so horrifying as realizing the love of your life, your best friend, partner and companion is gone.

No doubt you're in a great deal of pain, yet you're thinking of others in posting your warning. That is a great tribute to your Stephanie.

My Dad had melanoma -- many different spots -- but all were caught in time (although a large chunk of his ear was removed). He grew up in Miami (1920's), with lots of time outside in the sun. Years before his diagnosis, without any awareness of skin cancer, my sisters and I greased ourselves with baby oil and sunbathed, even with tin-foil "reflectors," at the beach and at home.

I figured I was just a freckly person until a dermatologist pointed out that all the parts covered by a bathing suit are pale white and clear. (Duh!!) It would have been much worse, but I was so embarrassed by my ghostly-pale skin at the beach that I stayed quite covered up in my teens. Now I see a dermatologist annually.

Why people go to tanning salons is beyond me. Surely everyone knows the danger of this aesthetic now. Our skin colors are what they are.

Whatever caused your Stephanie's melanoma, you honor her in passing on the warning you did.
