Those reports were part of a disinformation campaign.

Still, he could be dead, as the result of either bombing attacks that likely injured him years ago, or from US Special Forces and/or mercenaries from that region. If so, it is unlikely that his death would have been reported.

Of course during the Bush administration any investigation of these leads were stifled no doubt by his Secretary of State and Attorney General.
