2. Johnny's Selected Seeds (Maine) is my long-standing seed source.
I used to use Henry Fields and even ordered from Gardens Alive (non-seeds) in the past, but they were both bought by the company that owns Bursey's and Gurney's and a bunch of other mail order seed and plant companies. The last order I placed with Henry Fields didn't show up for over three weeks and I finally canceled it. The "phone support" was useless. They couldn't even hazard a guess as to when the order would ship. So sad. Henry Fields used to be such a fine company.

8. +1
Territorial Seeds ( www. territorialseed.com) is good too. Like Johnny's the catalogue is so full of information that I keep it for reference.

Pinetree Garden Seeds ( www.superseeds.com ) is a great place to buy smaller packets dirt cheap.

9. Thank you! I was bummed out with Henry Fields - I used to get my blue potatoes there.
Fortunately, I have a local garden center that carries a nice variety of blue potatoes. You just have to keep asking when they expect to get the shipment. If you aren't there on the day they arrive you're taking your chances. Last season I not only got there when they arrived, but they hadn't even opened the sack yet! They make the most beautiful mashed potatoes. We had a great crop this year.

12. Pinetree Gardens is a great company!
My catalog came last week! I use them all the time, not just for seeds, but for supplies and books. They also carry soap-making products.

Another interesting supplier is the South Carolina Foundation Seed Association (http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/seed/veg.htm). They have a compact variety of cucumber called "Patio Pickle", which I like because it grows well in containers. Lots of heirloom varieties, and a whole bunch of different field pea seeds.

10. thank you, and all the other posters in this thread--a couple of sites I knew nothing about
and disappointed to hear about gardens-alive--used to be my favourite source for really good pet supplements, as well.

time to start ordering my catalogues, I can see.

11. have ordered for many years from le jardin de gourmet--
they have sample size seed packs (now about 35 cents each) which is a great way to go if you want to try different things in small quantities. have never had any trouble with them:
