Was this actual dialogue from a Law and Order episode?
If so, kudos to them! (Saw this in a blog.)
Woman: There’s a million people trying to sneak into our country....
Detective Munch: Gee, it’s almost like someone hung a sign, ‘give us all your huddled masses...’

2. I remember that line
It stuck in my head - some quirky/snarky remarks on that show at times. :)

5. Did some looking up. Episode name is "Tortured". Season 4. Aired 2003.
By the way, it's weird synchronicity that I found this while some particularly ugly members of the DU American Albedo Preservation Brigade are stinking up the place.

8. It seems
like they stink up the place fairly often, unfortunately.

I'm going to have to find that episode. I don't recall seeing it.

week.

7. Of course it was the French who hung out that sign

on the base of the Statue of Liberty. People tend to forget that.

10. No they didn't.
IIRC, The New Colossus was written by an American and an American suggested it become part of the statue.

18. Sorry, you're wrong. It was all the French. Americans had nothing to do with it.

We didn't even know it was there. All these immigrants kept coming over and we didn't know why...kind of like someone getting kicked over and over again when they have a "Kick Me" sign slapped on their back. Boy are our faces red now.

20. The French have been sabotaging us since...well, forever it seems!
First, immigration. Second, french fries.

I boycott them by exclusively eating tater tots. American.

We help kick the Nazis out and the thanks we get is an attempt to give us all coronaries?

11. Good thing they do, since it was written by Emma Lazarus, a New Yorker of Portuguese Sephardic..
ancestry. She wrote 'New Colossus' in 1883 and lived in Greenwich Village much of her life.

17. I think most people assume since America has let that plaque sit there for over 100 years, the U.S.

embraces that position.

Sort of the same way that I assume people with McCain 2008 yard signs on their lawn supported McCain in 2008 regardless of the fact that they did not make the signs themselves.

19. Also: Those words are on the pedestal of the statue. The pedestal was designed by the U.S.

13. Yes, I remember that episode
Munch is always sarcastic, and I love Richard Belzer's style of humor.

14. Yep! As people pointed out, that's Det. Munch in Law and Order SVU
SVU has some great lines in it. I know it can be smutty, but I just love it.
