Black Friday Spending Rose Slightly (0.5% YOY, on-line sales grow)

Shoppers returned to malls Saturday as observers began reviewing early reports showing just how much consumers spent during their Black Friday shopping trips.

The weekend's first spending data for the day after Thanksgiving showed shoppers spent only slightly more in stores this Black Friday than they did last year. Fresh signs of much stronger online sales during the traditional holiday shopping kickoff mean more might have shopped from home.

Preliminary sales data showed shoppers spent $10.66 billion on Black Friday. That's only 0.5% more than last year. The figures were compiled by ShopperTrak RCT Corp., a Chicago research firm that tracks sales at more than 50,000 stores.

Web marketing analyst Coremetrics said its data showed the average amount online shoppers spent on Black Friday rose 35% as shoppers spent roughly $170.19 an order -- up from $126.04 last year. The San Mateo, Calif., company also said Web shoppers also bought more items with each purchase.

1. Does the refrigerator I had to order today count?

I called a repairman, but he basically took one look at it and said, "Get another one." He didn't even charge me for parts or labor. Even with my new job, my Christmas plans are canceled for this year.
