Winter has arrived (albeit not officially) in the San Bernardino National Forest. It's going to be CAR HOCKEY in downtown Big Bear Lake today! I'm stayin' in! All those flatlanders up here playing Automobile Pinball scare me somethin' fierce!

1. Yeah, all that is supposed to be here (south east AZ)
sometime after noon today. Snow down to 4000 feet (up to 6in accumulation). I'm right at 3800 feet, so who knows... probably won't snow, but Arizona drivers and snow don't mix. I lived in Colorado for many years, so this is nothing to me... but I don't want to tangle with a bunch of people who haven't seen snow before... and their 2000 lb vehicles.

3. I'm a mile up in NM
so if you don't hog it all, we'll start getting it late this afternoon.

The mountains here are parched. We're desperate for snowpack.

5. Watching the satellite loop on weatherbug and
it looks to be falling apart. We might not even see any rain.

2. You can sure tell the people from southern California around here
They think 4 WD in that SUV means they can do the speed limit on the highway when our variety of snow gets pounded into glare ice immediately.

I generally crawl along in second gear, watch them blow past and do doughnuts ahead of me.

Happens every damn time it snows, and it snows a lot even in the southern Rockies.

8. We have that problem in Houston too.
Rain, they speed up, and we get about 60 inches a year!!!! That's a lotta rain.

A tiny bit of ice, and they really freak out. Snow that melts when it hits the ground, they freak out.

Last winter, Houston had its first hard freeze in EIGHT YEARS.

And when I was a kid growing up in Houston, we had two or three or four hard freezes, at least 24 hours in the low 20s. With ice. And I had to wear a &^%$# damn dress to school....:grr:

what global warming??

12. Ha! I got nailed by a bizarro yesterday
on a school uniform thread for suggesting that jeans would be great for both sexes, that the damn dresses uniform codes always seemed to favor hobbled girls on the playground when they were young and invited sexual harassment when they were older.

Daddy just looooves his little girl in dresses, dontcha know!

I remember the damn Catholic school uniform in northern Indiana when it was 30 below.

That's just another of a zillion reasons I left when I was ten.

4. Typical. Six inches is really five and a half.
My brother at Thanksgiving claims he's 6'2". I'm 5'11" amd I could bite a cracker off his forehead.

Come on, now.

To be fair, I love how Californians start driving into each other in the rain, let alone snow.

All of you who moved up here to Oregon prove it every winter.

6. Okay, I got a little overzealous about the 6" thing. I've never done that before I swear.
I do know one thing though, the flatlanders will be here today and tomorrow and they'll leave a mess o' broken taillights, headlights, mirrors, and assorted car parts.

11. I only trust the female weather forecasters
Because the men always promise you more inches than you get.

My brother and his fam live in Riverside, and we try to visit your nabe whenever we're out there (usually in the summer). Can't imagine flatlander-type driving on those mountain roads with snow! :scared: Stay safe till the amateurs clear out! :hi:

14. And that is surprising, how?
It always snows in winter in the mountains northeast of Los Angeles (Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear, Crestline, etc.). They have several ski areas up there. Why should anyone be shocked at that?

16. Who was surprised, and who was shocked? I was merely celebrating my
favorite time of year here. Let it snow, Let snow, Let it snow...

There was one surprise, though. I got up to use the little boy's room at 4:30 this a.m., and there was the slightest of dusting on my deck. When I finally got out of bed at 8 a.m., there was the 5+ inches of snow I mentioned. Between those two times, it must have snowed pretty hard to accumulate that much.

I love it!

18. In Los Angeles you can go skiing and go to the beach the same day
Snow is a factor of altitude, and the mountains are close to the city.

My favorite was cross-country on the Angeles Crest Highway after they stopped plowing it, or up on top of Mt. Pinos near Frazier Park. Both give beautiful views of the desert while skiing in deep snow.
