Columbus hires firm to plan for surveillance cameras

Columbus officials have taken the first step toward installing surveillance cameras in city neighborhoods.

Columbus City Council approved an ordinance that eventually could lead the city to watch neighborhoods via video camera.

At the Nov. 16 council meeting, members approved legislation to issue a purchase order of $250,000 for video surveillance consultant services with Security Risk Management Consultants Inc.

That money comes from the city's Safety Voted Bond fund, according to the ordinance.

"As part of a comprehensive approach to preventing and fighting crime in the city of Columbus, Security Risk Management will provide a detailed analysis and information necessary to make the important decisions on how video surveillance camera technology may be utilized in a neighborhood pilot program," according to the ordinance.

"The consultant will also provide guidance to the city on neighborhood selection, policy development, hardware selection and video camera placement."

Security Risk Management also would become the project manager for installation and oversight should the city move forward with the surveillance plan.

I was just there, seemed pretty safe to me.

5. I enjoyed the COSI center, right on the river downtown.
That's about all I enjoyed.

Airport was nice, and the lady at the Doubletree gave me a great upgrade to a corner room with nice view.

Listen around noon for a loud series of sirens.

Disaster warning system, so I was told.

I peed my pants.

Not really.

:P

6. Coming to a neighborhood near you,
I'm so glad I live in the country, where rural governments don't have the money to do this. Of course I still have to worry about satellites and planes, but I doubt I'll have to worry much about cameras, and when I do, well hey, there are missed shots during deer season:evilgrin:
