H1N1 D225G mutation a reason of concern
The question is will this mutated strain be passed on human to human as the 1918 mutated virus did. The biggest concern at this time is the severity of illness the mutated version of H1N1 causes. The main cause of death in the Ukraine D225G mutation has been bleeding on the lung which leads to total destruction of the lung tissue. Similar findings were seen in the 1918 pandemic. The infection gets deep into the bases of the lungs and causes a catastrophic cascading chemical reaction to take place.

From Recombinomics.com

Thus, there was and is ample evidence of D225G in severe and fatal cases. Like 1918, it is not in all samples from fatal cases, and as with all infectious disease, not all infections are fatal. If the initial dose is low, or the hosts mounts and effective early defense, the clinical course may be mild, as has been seen with virtually all influenza infections, including H5N1 infections such as those in Egypt.

1. Ah, HELL no...
ChickMagic and I just recovered from H1N1; we're not in the mood for yet another round of this. Suddenly, I'm not so sure our newly-acquired antibodies will be enough to repeal the new strain.

3. I had swine flu too
And I still have ,crap in my lungs,I'm not sure why.I feel tired more.I was not given tamiflu .I guess medical assistance patients are not worth wasting tamiflu on. I was tested for swine flu, lest I infect some rich shithead..they stuck a thin plastic bendy swab deep into my throat, test came back a week later,I had swine flu.The swine flu didn't seem as bad as some of the seasonal flu I have had before tho.If this nastier flu kills me I hope it takes me fast.I am weary of this world too many sociopaths fucking everything up,and I don't see a future worth living here.If by quirk I survive it,I know death will come another way.Because existance is just perverse to me. The human world is so vicious and pointless.Wars to dominate, tons of money spent to kill, and pillage for the rich, and there is not a peep over war being a waste of money, yet we squabble over the costs of health care for our own citizens who are suffering. And the christian control freaks want to squabble over abortion!! WTF the priorities in this country the 'leaders' think matter so much, are so sociopathic it blows my mind.

6. I just got over H1N1 and I was very concerned it was going to develop
Edited on Sat Nov-28-09 12:07 AM by snagglepuss
either into Bronchitis or Pneumonia which used to happen whenever I got flu, which was every year until I got regular flu shots. I didn't get the H1N1 shot yet because it only became available the week I contracted H1N1.

I believe there is one reason alone why this flu was mild, unlike no other flu I've had before, and that is because of Vitamin D. Since last Friday as soon as I started having a dry cough I took 10,000 IUs a Vit D3 per day. (The Vitamin D Council advises alot more but I since had already got my Vit D level up to 60 ng/L, I opted for 10,000/day.)So even though my chest became very congested, it cleared within days without any complications.)

I know alot of people still doubt all the hype about Vit D but please read the attached article. New research shows the lungs themselves have sites which activate storage Vit D and keep the activated vitamin in lung tissue because it is vital to fighting lung infections as well as lung tumors.

I hope you're better soon.

11. I take vitamin D too
I can't absorb it from the sun,and I once took medication that took all the vitamin D out of my body unknownst to me.I was lifting weights and had nasty bone pain,I thought it was muscle.I would hobble on my feet in the morning they hurt so much. But by evening all seemed ok.I'd work out and OMG my muscles hurt the next day .I'd wrap them in ace bandages.I found out why I hurt so bad was not muscular at all. I had no vit.D in me to speak of. My D levels were shockingly low.Well long story short my endrocrinologist has me on lots of Vit.D now..

9. IIRC, the mutation of concern has no effect on the hemagglutin and
neuraminidase antigens on the virus's surface that confer immunity. I had my H1N1 shot and I am NOT worried about catching a more aggressive mutant.

8. having had H1N1
I looked for info about what makes this flu different from others. The only real information I found was in a Canadian newspaper online. The fact that the H1N1 goes deep into lung tissue is what makes it different. The doctor in the article noted that the secondary infections were what caused the fatalities - bacterial pneumonia, or rather drug resistant bacteria was the cause of most of the deaths.

The US media and government have been very sparing in their specific info.

12. It's amazing how removing a charged residue from a protein....
....can be the difference between life and death.
