My 10,000th post

Just wanted to say thank you to Skinner and all of you for making this place what it is - with all its warts - the most interesting forum on the Internet. I come here for news mostly now and humorous takes on the days events and don't post as much as I used to.

I started here the summer of 2005... that awful year after Bush started his second term. I was depressed and wandered around hopelessly for several months wondering what I could do that would have a meaningful impact and/or give me hope in the future. I live in what was then a solid bastion of RWinger nuttiness in northern Illinois – those who admitted publicly to being Democrat jeopardized their jobs. I had worked so hard to get Kerry elected, the re-election of dim son sucked all the oxygen out of my universe. Fortunately, my sister was more resilient than me and told me about finding this place, that it had news sources from all over and some of the posters made her laugh out loud (a very rare thing in 2005). She said to especially look for posts by H2OMan as he wrote essays that were truly amazing. And you know, she was right. Since that time, much has fortunately changed in our region. Our District has elected only its second Democrat in 150 years; there are a lot more visible Democrats and liberal thinkers here due to a lot of activism on the part of many.

My participation, my activism surprises me at times but I am out there doing my thing now too. In very large part to the encouragement and ideas expressed here. This is a very powerful engine for good... not sure that everyone here recognizes it... but I do. We have come so far in 4 years - esp. since 2001 when this was founded. And yes, we do have much farther to go but it's amazing what we have done together in such a short time.

This place can be annoying, infuriating, enlightening, hysterically amusing and is able to move me to tears. Sometimes all of the above within an hours time spent here. I know of no other place like it on the web and count myself very fortunate to be a member here. Hat tip to all the wonderful posters here who make this place the best source of news on the web - I won't list you all as I am sure to miss someone as there are so many of you. And a special hat tip to the activists who remind us that sitting at our computers gaining knowledge is only half the task. Getting up, moving our butts out the door to a protest, to work on a campaign, or simply to stay home and write those dreaded letters to the editor, to being a force for change in our communities is the important second step after sharing what the wrongs are that need righting here.

Such an odd thing this Internet thing is. Connects people from all over the country and the world in ways we would never have thought possible just 10 years ago. We really do share experiences and dreams together with people we would have formerly felt were strangers. I don't know about how the rest of you feel but when I see many names on here.. like yours, babylon sisters, california peggy, and so many others... you are so familiar and not unlike acquaintances I know here in town. In fact, I may know more about some DUers, despite username aliases, than I do about my 3D acquaintances here. And tho that does read oddly, I'm going to leave it up. :)

Maybe I need to come on every once in awhile and do a reminder. We need to stop and pull our heads up every few miles of slogging thru the mess and see just how far we have carried this load. If DU wasn't such a source of powerful liberal activism, we wouldn't have so many damn trolls here.

My sister, with whom I am not the least bit competitive (heh), and I used to joke about how easy it was to move our post count by just K and Ring with no comment. A simple (as in minded) but effective way to get to 1000 posts. She was just torked that after introducing me to this place,I was the first to get to that magical number. Of course I blab much more than her but she felt I just k and r'd my way to 1000.
