Hey New Yorkers! And anyone in or soon to be in the New York City area
Want to support something really cool&aGREAT cause?: St Mark's Place open TONIGHT
Just a quick note for the new yorkers (NYC) folks and any DUer or friends in or near the city.
My good friend whose family is trying to keep their theater (Theater 80 at ST MARKS PLACE) from being destroyed by the economic crisis and the building torn down for MORE NYU HOUSING is reopening and premiering a new indie film TONIGHT in one of the coolest and oldest theater venues in NY.
The theater was a speakeasy and is being refurbished by a family who inherited the theater from their late dad who was an actor/director and who gave Bobby DeNiro his first acting job in NYC Theater.
It is a beautiful space rich with history and could REALLY use support from the progressive community to keep it alive in its awesome St Marks Place location in Greenwich Village.
Check here for the cool premier and brand new Indy film opening there TONIGHT:
http://www.theatre80.org/calendar.aspx The film features someone I worked with in the theater (Phyllis Somerville) as well as LEON from Curb Your Enthusiasm and a standup who has been a writer for SNL AND one of the guys from THAT SEVENTIES SHOW.
The guy whose family inherited this former speakeasy/theater-for-the-mob (where Frank Sinatra is said to have worked as a waiter when he was a kid) is a human rights activist who worked with me and worked for the late Civil Rights Atty. Bill Kunstler on Native rights issues.
He is an activist Quaker and is struggling to pay the taxes and keep the building going and NEEDS our support for progressive causes, art and culture. The venue s also now available for events and film and may be added to venues for the Tribeca Film Festival. It is really one of the most awesome theaters in NYC - small (130 seats), and rich with history and vibes.
Check out the link above for info on the film (a dark comedy called "Brooklyn Heist") which premiers tonight in the Greenwich Village coolest venue ever.
Trotsky, btw, lived just above the theater before he went to Russia in 1918 or so when he was a journalist in NYC.
PLEASE go and check it out, see the film and bookmark the wesite for future events. I plan to be doing some work there in the future and if they get their liquor license soon as planned it would b a great meeting spot for DUers in or dropping by NYC.
