Bedford woman arrested on murder, child abuse charges

More than a year after the death of a Bedford baby girl, a woman has been arrested and charged with murder.

Cecilia Leigh Burnette, 25, of Bedford, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse in the September 2008 death of eight-month-old Marissa Burnette, according to a news release from the Bedford City Police Department.

She is being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail without bond.

The release, issued late Friday afternoon, did not specify the relationship between the baby and Burnette, and Police Chief Jim Day could not be reached for comment.

The baby died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to autopsy results from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke.
