Teen Waits 3 Days For Black Friday Deal
Teen Waits 3 Days For Black Friday Deal
Bargain-Hunters Weather Rain, Cold

ORLANDO, Fla. -- People around the country will get up early to get bargains on Black Friday, but one local teen is taking bargain hunting to a new level.

Minh Nguyen, 18, has been in line at the Best Buy in Waterford Lakes since Tuesday.

"I'm not messing around," Nguyen said.

Nguyen wants to score a deal on a desktop computer, and the rain and cold will not keep him away.

The teen's mom offered to trade places with him overnight so he could sleep in a warm bed, but he chose to stay in line.

1. Consumerism is a sickness...
If the dipshit did a little research, he would discover that the item he was waiting for will be readily available for the same price a week after "black friday."

Sorry if you caught a cold, Minh...:eyes:

5. Oh, the November cold in Orlando!
How ruggedly individual. Orlando in the winter is like here in the summer (Seattle.)

He gets to be on TV!!

7. And the saddest part is ....
As soon as the store opens, they'll declare, "Sorry, we've already sold out on those. While you're in the store, how about this $2000 model over here?"

8. My mother-in-law
was at a Shopko store last night. She wanted an item that was advertised in their circular. The one on display was an older model. There were none boxed on the shelf. The clerk called another clerk. That clerk called the manager. The manager rummaged around in the stockroom. My 80-year-old MIL was steaming, getting angrier and angrier. The manager came back from the stockroom and admitted that they had only ordered in 5 of the items. My MIL blew a gasket, was reading him the riot act when…she fainted. They took her to the hospital in an ambulance. She's still in the hospital today. They're trying to get her heart stabilized. It's not serious, just an arrhythmia, but still…

9. Yep, I am not at all surprised.

I stopped going for awesome deals in the flyers when (as a result of many personal experiences, sadly) I realized they were just lures to get people in the store.

Sorry that your mom-in-law had to go through that, especially on Thanksgiving. I hope she gets to feeling better. My mom survived an actual heart attack, so I certainly understand how taxing those events can be on the body. Curious to know whether the store will offer any sort of apology, though I'm sure that's wishful thinking on my part.

10. Seriously, an apology for what?

What product is so important to one's life that they start screaming and yelling to the point of fainting?

If I go to a store after seeing a sale in the paper, I accept the fact that other people may have seen the same thing and beat me to it. That's life.

We all play our little part in the collective stupidity of consumerism.

12. An apology for baiting her, which is why she got so upset.
It's commonplace. They advertise a great deal, but they don't actually have the merchandise. They just do it to bait folks into the stores.

15. But they apparently did have it
And five other people bought it ahead of her. A store's stockroom does not have unlimited space, and many times the store doesn't have the control over what they get sent in if they are a national chain. If you go into a Radio Shack, they generally don't have more than five of anything because they are usually a small mall store and have a tiny stockroom.

I also worked in retail, and I have a huge problem with people who take it out on the rankin file clerk or even the manager when they often have no control over what or how much they get from the central warehouse.

I suppose the better thing to do would have been to not advertise it. She never would have gone, and never known it was there and maybe they'd still be sitting there on the shelf and she wouldn't be in the hospital.

14. Take it from me,
you don't know my mother-in-law.

She wouldn't have been yelling and screaming. It would probably have been better for her if she had in order to let off some of that steam she was feeling.

It wasn't that the product was that important to her. She is retired from retail (which is why she wouldn't have been yelling and screaming) and she knows how fraudulent this type of thing is.

It is highly unlikely that she would let them off the hook with an "apology." I told my husband, "Whatever it was that she wanted, I'll bet they figure out a way to get it for her."

16. You said she read them the riot act
I thought that meant she was yelling and screaming.

I'm sorry for what happened, and the stores totally play their part in the silly little dance of capitalism, but short of a machine that could cure chronic back, leg and head pain or a deal on dialysis machine for someone with kidney problems, there is just no product worth being sent to the hospital over on Thanksgiving.

18. Not exactly.
Her tone would have been measured, but she would have been getting her point across strongly.

She has had heart problems in the past, and blasting loose may have kept her from having the fainting spell, though. But maybe not.

20. Nah, it's a great melting pot story
His family likely arrived as refugees with little more than the clothes on their backs. Now he's totally integrated into our consumer society. America for the win!

my husband and I drove around to see who was waiting in line outside the stores. Best Buy had a line at 6 p.m. People are crazy. It was cold and rainy here.
