I will say, your stunts are more likely putting the kibosh on equal rights for everyone, so you can stop spinning this bull for your own personal benefit, shut up, and go away. Wretch.

Any person who is part of a minority should understand that you represent your community and he does gays no service when he is outlandishly raunchy. Frankly I love him too much to see that performance...I suspect it would be too painful for me to watch.

Wow.

I do not represent my community. I represent me. Mr. Lambert does not represent me or my community. He represents himself.

If Mr. Lambert wants to behave in that manner that's on him. It does not reflect on me in any way, shape or form. Except for the narrow-minded who have already made up their mind that all gays are like that anyway.

Oh, and I did not see the video. Do not care to see the video. Am not a fan of his or anyone else from American Idol.

8. Oh is this unique to the Asian culture then?
Personally I feel a collective pride and also feel a sense of shame when I see how people that I share an ethnicity with do. It breaks my heart when I see a parent apologize for the awful thing their child has done on the late night news. The shame they feel on behalf of their kin is so evident. That runs through the range of emotions for me. When I see my fellow Asian's success I feel like they have brought honor to us all.

Remember the Britney-Madonna kiss? Last week on the Early Show, they were discussing Adam's performance. They blurred Adam's same-sex kiss but showed a close-up of Britney and Madonna. There is a double standard (girl/girl=good, boy/boy=bad).

IIRC (yes I was a teenager in the 80s), it was a lot of controversial performances and videos. Yes, early on in her career.

What did Lambert do that was so much more shocking than Madonna in her youth that he would have to 'earn" the "clout" to do it? Oh...wait.

American Idol and Dancing with the Stars I will explain: when you are a mega star like Madonna you are granted more allowances for controversial performances. Furthermore that kiss was done on the VMA on this little network known as MTV where risque television is the standard. Madonna has always had a risque act only difference was she never relied pseudo talent show with call-in votes in order to break into the music business. You know she has actually busted her ass for years to maintain her hugely successful career. So you may not agree but there absolutely should be a double standard between one of the most successful pop stars ever and a American Idol reject.

Adam Lambert decided to sell his soul in order to get some fame by going on on a Middle America Apple Pie music show and he choose to delude himself into thinking that these same people would stick by him when he turned into a Gay caricature.

Yeah, by acting like a common street strumpet and getting the RRRW up in arms with her sacrilegious shenanigans. I suppose Adam should kiss Jesus and romp around in front of burning crosses wearing lingerie to "earn" his right to kiss another guy in front of others? :eyes:

11. From what I've read, most of the complaints were over..
the kiss he gave his male keyboardist.

You have to realize that these complainers don't want to see gays kissing in any context. And especially gay men.

The performance itself is a retread of what Prince, Madonna, Bowie, et al have already done in the past. Personally, as a straight person, my biggest complaint is that his vocals were terrible. A shame because Adam is normally a fantastic singer with a lot of talent.

Hollywood is big enough for both the Clay Aikens and the Adam Lamberts. Adam is obviously too flamboyant for some people which is perfectly fine. Taste is individual. However acceptance should include all gays and not just a tiny sliver of what is deemed acceptable.

36. Hollywood loves their castrated gays as funny sidekicks, not sexual beings.
Richard Simmons, Rip Taylor, Paul Lynde, Neil Patrick Harris, Andy Dick... the list goes on.

A sexualized gay cannot be gay. Witness Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter. The rumored gay men today carry on that legacy. Tom Cruise, Kevin Spacey, Keanu Reeves, Julian Sands, etc. No proof that any of these are gay other than rumors, and Hollywood likes it that way.

When one does come out of the closet, then they get either typecast or black listed... Like Rupert Everett, Robert Gant, Thom Biertz, Jaye Davidson, Alexis Arquette, Peter Paige, etc. The biggest typecast gay man is George Takei. A recurring role on Heroes... another Science Fiction show after his long ago Star Trek.

16. Au contraire, mon frere! It's entirely about societal rejection of male/male sexuality.
Madonna can kiss Britney.

Lady Gaga and Madonna can get all over each other.

Miss Perry can sing about kissing a girl.

This is about MEN, and particularly it is about men who are homophobic, and because of that homophobia, needlessly fear even the sight of two men engaging each other sexually.

Fantasia Barrino is starring "The Color Purple" on Broadway, has 8 Grammy nominations.

David Cook and Kelly Clarkson definitely still have careers.

And yeah, there are ton of also-rans and never-weres, no doubt. But Adam Lambert has real talent and charisma - I think he could be one of the ones that last.

42. Actually a ton of them are still around
Kelly Clarkson performed on this very same award show (she won the first year)

Daughtry is still big. I saw three teenagers wearing t-shirts for him on separate occasions during Wizard of Oz rehearsals last month.

Clay Aiken is a household name as an openly gay musician. His fourth CD last year made its debut on the Billboard charts at #4 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on Billboard Top Internet Albums.

David Archuleta just released a Christmas CD

Jordin Sparks won a People's Choice Award this year and was nominated for a Grammy.

Kelly Pickler had a NUMBER ONE country album this year and was touring with Taylor Swift over the summer.

Carrie Underwood WON a Grammy this year for best Female Country Vocal Performance

Fantasia is currently staring in the Color Purple. I know she was at the Kennedy Center when I was there in August. Her third album drops in 2010

Jennifer Hudson, who won that Oscar, has yet ANOTHER movie releasing this year, and a new CD in the works produced by Ne-Yo, and an ABC Christmas special airing this December called Jennifer Hudson: I'll Be Home for Christmas.

What really makes a statement is that I have NEVER watched a single season of American Idol, nor have I ever purchased a CD by any of these artists other than David Archuleta and yet I know all of this. Why? Because they are household names and a major part of the CURRENT entertainment world. I may think American Idol is a bunch of crap, because I feel songwriting is the most important musical skill a person can have... more important than singing. But I'm not in denial about how popular the former idols have become.

You are either in denial, or just very out of the mainstream loop if you legitimately believe that American Idol has produced nothing but a bunch of used-to-bes or never-weres ...

You got me. 9 "entertainers" out of how many dozens and dozens crammed down the throats of couch dwellers over the years. But, they have folks wearing t-shirts and releasing Christmas albums.

And it's not that I don't think American Idol hasn't produced anything. Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest are incredibly rich, either partially or largely because of this, depending.

49. Only 9 entertainers? There have only been 9 seasons.
Edited on Fri Nov-27-09 06:34 AM by musicblind
9 seasons and 9 stars is pretty impressive for any talent show.

But, that being said I agree with you to some extent. I do not listen to the radio. I don't like most of what is top 40. And I've never watched a season of American Idol.

My favorite artists are Ani Difranco, Counting Crows (they're still around), Sparky's Flaw (before they changed their name to Parachute when they got a record deal), Marilyn Manson, Hanson (they're still around and now work with Bob Dylan's producers), Panic At The Disco (Pretty. Odd. era onward) and Alanis Morissette(she's still around just not popular) ... However I also am liking Lady Gaga's work as she seems to be a true artist lost in a sea of generic people. She is one of only 20 people in the world to be given early admission to NYU Tisch School of the Arts when he was 17 because she is a musical genius. She is greatly gifted at writing songs and writes songs you've heard from many artists who aren't talented enough to write for themselves. Including songs for Britney Spears, The Pussycat Dolls, and even Adam Lambert. If you look past the chaos of her performances, she has real talent.

The thing is, I don't limit myself to one genre and look down on other people because they enjoy a different genre. I've never been the kind of person to apply the "True Scotsman Fallacy" to an artist not being "real punk" or dislike an artist I used to like because now their music is popular. Yet far too many people do this, because they associate such a negative connotation to what is "mainstream"...

Rap, Alternative, Pop, Indie, Hard Rock, R&B, Jazz, Showtunes, I am merely a fan of good music, and there is good music to be found in every genre if you look at it truly from the perspective of art with no outside bias about the people creating the work.

For instance, "Just Dance" is a masterpiece when you look at it from the perspective of "dancefloor anthem" it conveys a very intense emotion and unapologetic portrait of the club scene Lady Gaga grew up in during her early days in New York. The song "Vogue" was a daring take about Madonna's experience in the gay clubs which were not yet accepted as a part of the world's culture when that song was released. On the other hand a more serious song such Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" paints an intense portrait character who has looked down on others all her life and is now faced with the strain of misfortune herself. Or you can go for something even more serious such as Tori Amos' song "Me And A Gun" which discusses a real life rape she incurred at the hands of member's of her Father's church.

All four of those songs are art. They all four achieve their goals in using creative energy to express an idea or thought. Just like some ideas and thoughts we have in everyday life are not as weighty as others, not all songs are going to be as serious as others. Just because club life doesn't resonate with someone, doesn't mean a song about it isn't art and that it doesn't have emotion and expression behind it.

Am I making a defense for all music? No. There is bad, uncatchy, unbeautiful, unwitty, unintelligent, uninspiring, undanceable music out there, but such things are not confined to only the top 40 hits. Just like great art is not excluded from top 40 hits.

I hope I was able to show, in a non offensive way, how music that is considered mainstream can include art amongst the piles of trash. I love analyzing songs as I am a songwriter myself and play in a part-time band. :)

And trust me, I agree with you that most of the music in the top 40 is crap. I even wrote a song lyric stating "The truth that I find hidden in every pop song that I know/the greatest songs ever written will never make the radio."

If Janet Jackson sucked dick on stage, that would not have hurt equal civil-rights for woman or African-Americans. Both what Adam and Janet did was for controversy- they got it- fine.

GLBTQ people are individuals, just like heterosexuals. Heterosexuals are the ones starting all the wars--maybe we would take away their civil-rights. That is if we are to follow your logic.

I despise people who "think" gays need to homogenize (pun intended) themselves so as to attain equal-rights.
