Should we be worried that ALL of our ready troops will be deployed?
When Obama sends his Second Surge to Afghanistan, nearly every troop available for deployment will be deployed. We have about 40,000 who are eligible to be deployed. When the 30-35,000 are sent, a small force will be left to deal with any unforeseen conflicts.

We are breaking our military. We are breaking our Treasury. We are creating a generation of wounded veterans. Does this seem like it is in the interest of our national security?

7. 5-10k, depending on the final number sent.
Not a lot really. And, if another surge is needed, then what?

4. I wouldn't worry except
for the 30,000 or so we have in south korea who would be screwed if the North tried anything.

I would suggest bringing all troops stationed abroad home (those not in active combat) so that they aren't put at that risk.

8. Does it feel drafty to you?
The feces is going to strike the ventilation device when somebody wakes up and discovers we ain't got all these troops. And the only way to rapidly restaff our military is, well, you know what it is.

11. The air from that draft has
been blowing for some time. If this "war" is continued I don't see how we have the men and women to fight it unless there is a draft. I am not advancing one. I am just afraid of it because if it goes through THEN we will see feet pounding the pavement to D.C. THEN people will start thinking of actually acting instead of just talking (like me). THEN, maybe someone will remember Vietnam.

12. That will bring the wars to an end when all Americans share some skin in the game. Especially
those that wrap themselves in the flag and sit home chanting war.

13. I don't think the country (or Congress) will go back to a draft.

Draft legislation may be the logical or needed approach--especially in another crisis,- but I'm thinking that DENIAL and distortion will go on and on while the military faces ever bigger strains.

In other words, the quagmire deepens.

18. Lots of young basement freepers will be developing draft-proof disabilities,
I'm thinking. Unless all those Cheetos™ have fattened them up enough to be 4F already.

Some NATO allies may delay on Afghan troops . . .

Brussels -- As US President Barack Obama readies to send extra troops to Afghanistan, NATO cautioned Wednesday that a number of US allies could wait until next year before following suit with reinforcements.

10. The way it is looking, the surge won't even be complete until
next December. And, like all the other surges, violence will go up. Then, we will be told to give it x number of years to work. And on and on and on....

That should take care of that problem.

22. I'm worried about the troops and I'm worried how we are going to pay for these 'messes'.
It isn't as if occupations are 'won'.

It isn't as if we are pissing away $180 million a day before the new 34,000 troops hit Afghanistan.

It isn't as if we had an exit strategy.
