Internet shoppers: Please pay your "USE" tax this year
As a reminder, states like California require you to list your online purchases you made that you not have all ready paid taxes on. Please list this on your state tax form if required and pay your taxes.

Happy Thanksgiving.

15. Our brilliant state .gov keeps coming up with hare-brained ideas like banning some TV sets
And putting useless restrictions on sales of handgun ammunition, all guaranteed to result in more people buying more stuff out of state and not paying the sales or use tax.

We now have the HIGHEST Sales Tax ever.

DMV Fees (car tax) has returned to the same level prior to his campaign promise to reduce DMV Fees and the State is STILL BROKE and quagmired in deficit spending. GOOD JOB you RATpubliCON Stooge Arnold

7. but the top tier income tax rate is down
and that's all that matters. And those pesky car tags are much cheaper. Those who own $50,000 Hummers need to pay taxes like that 1980 Honda owner!

10. DMV Fees increased 300% couple months ago
I think that $50,000 Hummer must cost $2000 to register each year

22. Regardless, if they could somehow take control of the CA state legislature
they could prevent the repukes from forcing their taxes on anyone. Democrats would never allow this sort of tax policy to happen on their watch.

25. Thanks to prop 13, the minority party is still capable of blocking new tax legislation.
67% vote for new tax legislation. It's gonna take more democrats to get rid of that and restore some sanity to the tax code. Until then, the rich and the big corporations will continue to fuck over the lower and middle classes and the pukes will continue to lie about it and Norquist will still exert control over the pukes and the radio will still broadcast RW lies and the republickers will still blame liberals.

20. He also promised to bust up some of the costly, largely useless state "commissions"
That provide high pay for easy work for termed-out politicians.

6. Right
As long as they refund my shipping costs. And that isn't going to happen.

Hell, one of the good things about the Internet is that you get out of paying the horribly regressive sales taxes. Go figure, they lowered the rate since 1964 of the highest earners income taxes from 90 to 35 percent, and at the same time, sales taxes, here anyway, doubled.

Taxes, off the rich, and onto everyone else, and many of the neo-cons voted for it. We all need to be trying to sluff off the most regressive of taxes, sales, and gas.

8. So how does this work?
Edited on Thu Nov-26-09 09:29 AM by FarCenter
Suppose that I'm at my daughter's in VA for Thanksgiving and buy a book from a WA company using their web server in a NV data center, which book they ship from a PA warehouse to my other daughter's address in NY where we will be at Christmas to give to my son so he can take it home to VT.

What do I send to which state?

26. Why would anyone do that?
Edited on Thu Nov-26-09 11:29 AM by 951-Riverside
Here in California we have to pay a "recycle" tax... err fee ranging from $8 to $25 on all Monitors, Laptops, Portable DVD players and Televisions, on top of that there is the sales tax, if I lived in Los Angeles County I will have to pay a 9.75% sales tax (In South Gate its actually http://www.boe.ca.gov/cgi-bin/rates.cgi?LETTER=S&LIST=CITY">10.750%!)

So lets to the math, If I purchased a 37 inch television in Los Angeles County...

Price: $499.99
Tax: 9.75% ($48.75)
Recycle Fee: $25
Total: $573.74 ($73.75 in taxes and fees)

or a 15 inch laptop

Price: $399.99
Tax: 9.75% ($38.10)
Recycle Fee: $16
Total: $454.09 ($54.01 in taxes and fees)

or a 21 inch monitor on blackfriday

Price: $79.99
Tax: 9.75% ($7.80)
Recycle Fee: $16
Total: $103.79 ($23.08 in taxes and fees)

and despite all of taxes and fees California collects, it's still broke.

Until the representatives of this state gets off their lazy asses and make necessary cuts and balance the budget people are not going to be inclined to voluntarily list all of their online purchases and voluntarily pay a "use" tax on top of the high taxes they're already paying.

Plus I don't want my tax preparer knowing I spent $9 on purchasing Muff Love 22. :yoiks:
