:

"The Torturer -
Andrew Walker stars as a contractor working in Iraq as an interrogator who is back home in the States trying to overcome post traumatic stress disorder. While here it is up to his psychiatrist, Nichelle Nichols, to get him back to sanity, so he can get back to torturing prisoners. It's a political movie, which is good since this is a subject that needs to be discussed. However, at times the politics overtakes the story. Even so, it is definitely worth checking out." - C.S.Strowbridge

o Not bad for our little film, especially when he said this about Transformers 2:

"It's kind of a mixed week on the home market. True, we do have Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, which should be the best-selling DVD of the year, as well as a record-breaking Blu-ray. However, it's not a very good movie"

I must admit, I only watched this because it had Lt. Uhura in it and I heard about it from The Young Turks, but I'm glad I did. The acting was great, but the torture scenes were extremely difficult for me to watch. Chilling indictment of the Bush administration and anyone who would even think about coming anywhere near this level of "interrogation". If you can watch this movie, and still feel that 1) these things are not torture, 2) these things are justified, you are probably a sociopath already. The most heinous crimes against humanity.

Very intriguing and interesting. Not a slasher film at all. Quite thought provoking. Anyone who approves of "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques" should see this movie.

A real nail-biter. Highly recommend!, 16 November 2009

This movie really surprised us (wife and I). When I first started watching it I thought I had the story line down and then it starts to twist and turn. Very spooky story with first rate acting, direction, camera and lighting. Andrew Walker does a terrific job in the lead and "Star Trek" veteran Nichelle Nichols and Mahsa Masoudi are great in their roles which evolve in an interesting direction.I had never seen Masoudi before but she did a great job. The story explores the psychological effects on Walker as he performs his interrogation duties for an independent contractor. The story turns constantly, he is not who we think, the prisoner is not who we think, the "Doc" is not who we think, the location is not where we think and the bomb... well, the bomb. See the movie.

... We MUST find ways to get people to watch this important film, as it makes clear the true consequences of torture for our whole society and way of life.

It shows us that torture is a cancer, likely to metastasize and spread throughout our nation. Just because we currently have an administration opposed to torture does not mean this will always be true. Until we raise public awareness of this issue, it will always will have the risk of returning. Have you considered contacting your local art theater about showing it? Do so!

Joanna

PS--I thought this was possibly the finest performance in Nichelle Nichols' whole career!

Thanks DU rules, nuff said -

PS - don't bother telling me we will not but a war criminal in jail, I know we are better than that!

1. Great! We're better than ignobly ignoring a war criminal's criminality! . . .
Good to know. Before I die, I'll see Kissinger breaking rocks in Spandau . . .

4. Good! I've been waiting almost 40 years. . .
Gotta admit, though, I'm long past cynicism and well into resignation. . .

5. Doesn't matter how much evidence we get against Bush
The right wing will claim we are only attacking Bush out of partisanship, and enough of the country will buy that for it to be impossible to prosecute him.

9. Why don't you just come out and bloody admit...
...that you are using this as a platform to make money by selling your movie. Why? Why obfuscate your involvement?

Link whoring sucks.

10. Hmmm, defend us from link dropping, or defend innocent people from torture, what should I do today
Do something constructive! We can make a difference!

I know these are frustrating times, but we must push forward what is right and good and true in the world.

Torture is abhorrent and must be curtailled. Criminal acts must be adjudicated.

14. You're trying to sell a movie to make money.
Furthermore, you've obfuscated your involvement in said movie in order to use DU as a platform for making money. Yes, you are so very altruistic.

16. That's a fine goal.
However, that's not what this thread is about, is it? This thread is about selling your movie. This thread is about you making a profit off of these atrocities.

17. Thanks!
FYI - We are not now, nor did we expect to ever make a dime off of our very modest budget film that brings to light the torture policies of the Bush administration in a unusual and exciting way that we think is more accessible to the American public than is presently being perused by very good documentaries, blogs, and organizations that we feel tend to preach to the converted.

In the war for hearts and minds, it is critical to use all media - like music and movie, as was done in the 60's - to reach out into, and transform, a sick war crazed culture into one of vibrant health and mutual appreciation.

Should we happen to actually break even and pay everyone back who put their hearts, minds and money into this project, it would be welcome, but is not essential. One does not enter into a project such as this intending to make money. There are hundreds of people like us working on various projects that will never make a dime, please check out Brave New theaters and see if there is one you feel like you can help.

Should the time come that we are actually profitable, we will be donating to CCR and the ACLU, and others (as we already do), as well as creating new works which expand and enlighten American minds who have been so perverted by the corporate media culture products such as '24' and 'Saw' into being desensitized to torture to such an extent that they now believe we have the right - indeed that it is good - to torture.

Thanks and good luck!

That pretty much sums up everything that I think is wrong with your idea.

19. That's not what we're saying at all. Nichelle was one of the Human Rights Consotiums
FETE d'EXCELLENCE Laureates for 2004.

Do you believe we should use enhanced interrogation on suspects?

8. I saw another Brave New Films documentary "Iraq For Sale"
just 2 days ago on DVD. It in't new, I'm just late to see it.

It's about mercenaries, contractors, and other war profiteers. I highly recommend it.

11. Yeah...a limited release movie will put * behind bars.
:eyes:

What exactly makes you think that a movie will put * behind bars when the mountains of evidence won't do it?

Is it the cast's compelling portrayal of people who never existed? Is it the script's dramatization of imagined conversations?

I, laconicsax, will bet you $100 to the charity of your choice that this movie does not put * behind bars.

12. Maybe we should just wait for our crack justice department to do it! That's the answer!
I don't believe in gambling - especially with my odds! It's a long shot, but I feel like those poor innocent people being tortured (see brokenlives.info) want us to try.
